“You’ve got to tell me these things daddy!”

Posted on Friday 25 January 2008 by Greg @ 7:35 am
Filed under: Rants

A few weeks ago I was talking to my little boy on the phone. We had a weird conversation that went something like this:

“Daddy are you the President of Dare 2 Share Ministries?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve got to tell me these things daddy!”

“Jeremy, you didn’t know that I was president of Dare 2 Share?”

“No. Christian told me” (Christian is Jeremy’s friend whose dad works for D2S) “I just thought you worked there.”

Pause

“That means that you are the boss of everyone and they have to listen to you right?”

“Um, well, I am not the boss of everyone. I have a group of people that I lead but also another group of people I have to answer to called a ‘board’. I ask God for wisdom because he is ultimately in charge of everything.”

“Oh. So you listen to Jesus and then tell everyone else what to do.”

“Um, something like that. We try to figure out what Jesus wants us to do together but I’m the one responsible before God and the board to make sure it gets done.”

Pause

“But you’re the President of Dare 2 Share right?”

“Yes.”

“Daddy, you’ve got to tell me these things!”

Pause

“I love you son.”

“I love you daddy.”

    • Hey Greg,

This is completely unrelated to your post, but I have a question about this: http://richarddawkins.net/article,2176,n,n

My atheist friend I told you about earlier had this to say about it:
“after watching the whole video, I can say I’m a bit queasier. This is sick. sick sick sick.”

It seems like “Letters From Hell” is turning people away from the cross.

I believe in the reality of Hell, but are scare tacticts really a good way to spur youth evangelism? Is it really good if it disgusts nonbelievers into hating Christianity even more?

I’m really conflicted on this. >_<

    • Heather,
I feel that this video is for the Christians who need to remember that we have a Great Commision. We need to follow God’s wishes and touch all of those who we are involved with. The scary part is for us to realize that we are responsible for teaching our friends that there is a way to get to Heaven. We are the ones who need to show the love and peace.
Do your aethist friends watch horror flicks? I feel that is sicker than the reality of what might happen if we don’t reach out to our friends and say that we are too busy to tell them about God’s love and the wonderful gift of Jesus!!
I hope that this helps your conflict!

    • It seems like we shouldn’t have to be scared into evangelism. Shouldn’t it be out of love for lost souls? Or is there a difference?

Also, where along the line did Hell become a place for humans to go? Wasn’t it initially made for Satan and his demons?

How is eternal burning and suffering a just punishment for breaking the ten commandments? I have friends who aren’t saved but they are still decent people. Yes, they fall short of God’s standard, and no they shouldn’t get Heaven if they reject Christ, but how can they possibly deserve eternal torment?

These questions have always bothered me, and I usually just tell myself that it’s God’s deal and I don’t need to understand it. But it bothers me. I want to know the answers. Do they exist?

    • Yo, what’s goin down ya’ll? Reppin Jesus? That’s wassup, u kno wat im sayin? Hey Heather, that question bothered me a lot too. I liked the Jehovah’s witness idea where if u don’t accept Christ, u just die. Thats it. End of your existance. The truth is: if you have sinned you have to face God on judgement day. God, being the good judge He is, would have to punish you and send you to hell. Lemme try to put it down for u like this:
Say you are in a courtroom. God is the judge and you are guilty of murdering someone. The punishment for murder is that you would have to go to jail or pay a million dollar bail. You can’t just say to God “I’ve been a decent person other than that and im sorry now”.God couldn’t just let you go.He wouldn’t be a good judge, would He? Now, say someone you don’t even know comes in the courtroom and says “Yo, this is my girl, we homies and i love her” and he pays the million dollar bail for you. Then God, the Good Judge, could let you go knowing that the fine has been payed by someone free of charges against him. But say that you, maybe because you think its too good too be true, don’t accept the bail. Now, you have to go to jail, there’s no other way out.

In the same way, if your friends dont want to accept the bail that Jesus is offering them with His blood, God must send them to hell, which is like the jail for all sin, because He is a holy and just God. That is the only other way the price for their sins can be paid…eternity in hell.If He lets them simply die and stop existing, their sins wouldn’t be paid for. They can’t just be nice people because the bible says that your good deeds are like rags in God’s eyes.I mean, it’s useless because you have already sinned.Your job is to make your friends accept His free gift. Let them know that one day it will be too late for them to run up on God and ask for forgiveness.Put it down fo’ Jesus,Peace out y’all.

    • Jail is a lot different than Hell. It’s a nice analogy, but the reality is way different. And it still doesn’t explain how inifinite suffering and torture are a fair price to pay for finite sinning. The time, space and existence that your sin takes up seems infinitesimal when compared to an eternity if burning pain.

      I’ll go read Hell Redux…

If God is just why is the punishment seemingly so much greater than the crime?

I don’t know. The question really truly does “grate against my logic”, as Greg puts it, and even more so against that of some of my friends. What do you say to an atheist who asks the unanswerable? “you just have to believe”?

    • hey heather, i’d just like to try to answer your questions now.
okay so God is definitely just with every decision made. i’ll explain, God is perfect like im sure you know therefore absolutely cannot even be where sin is. God sees everyone in the whole world exactly the same.we are all lost in our sin. he says no sin greater than another.so telling a little white lie is equal to murder.therefore everyone that doesnt except the free gift he was willing to give us to wipe away all our mistakes and sins do deserve hell. God sees his children as blameless and pure even though we still sin he’s already cleaned out all the sin in our hearts for the rest of forever, unlike unbelievers as where they still are seen as sinners in Gods eyes because they have yet to realize their mistake and ask God to help them out of it. okay the bible says that if you even dislike/hate someone with your heart that is the exact same thing as murder in Gods eyes. if you’ve stolen a piece of candy from a sibling thats still just like robbing a bank. Jesus said”whoever looks upon a women to lust after her has committed adultery already with her in his heart”and do you know what lust is? lust is just that time you turn your head to get another glance. it can be much more than that but also that small. God doesnt want anyone to go to hell, but he certainly cant have sin in heaven.there is no such thing as a “good person” were all equal in sin therefore we all deserve hell but God didnt want that so he sent his son to be our free gift to eterntiy so that we could escape from our trip to hell.
      hope this helped some:]

    • “absolutely cannot even be where sin is”

      1. Jesus came here fully God, fully man and lived with sinners. So either He can be around sin, or Jesus wasn’t fully God.

      2. I’ve always been taught God is omnipresent. If that’s true, then He must be able to be around sin. If it’s not, then He’s just staying cooped up in Heaven and isn’t really with us like it says in the Bible.

No one seems to be able to answer why sin of any kind constitutes eternal burning and torture. If He hates it that much and loves us so much, wouldn’t it be better to just make those souls cease to exist? Does fire and brimstone burn sin away? Couldn’t He just wave His hand and remove it all?

Oh and on your second-glance-equals-lust bit: Are you saying we should ignore our being attracted to someone else to the point of not even allowing ourselves to admire God’s handiwork? Maybe I’m not catching your drift, but God gave us hormones to be attracted to the opposite gender- it’s supposed to be that way. Sin comes when we commit adultery/lust and that seems distinguishable from God intended attraction. Of course, only God knows the heart…

      I’m up for persuasion.

    • Hi, My name is Katelin Hayes. At the end of last year my youth pastor mentioned a leadership trip called dare2share. I really didn’t know if God was leading me to go on this trip because I did not see my self as a “leader”. So, I prayed long and hard about going to dare2share, and I felt as if God was leading me to go. I was really excited about it because I thought it may help me to grow stronger in Christ and learn more about witnessing to others. I LOVED D.Gray! He had a wonderful testimony and I could relate to him alot as well as others in our youth group. I also would like to say “Job Well Done” to Lincoln Brewster and The Washington Projects. Another person I would like to commend would be you. Your messages were comprehendable and very touching. You seem to be a very devoted and Godly man. On the other hand there were a few things that went on at dare2share I felt were inappropriate. One of the things I felt was inappropriate would be the showing of Nacho Libre, Transformers, Superman, Dumb and Dumber, and A Night In the Muesum in between your message points. I felt as if all of these were taking away from the depth of your message, not only that but they are not Christian based movies. However, I liked when you showed the clips of The Passion of the Christ, Facing the Giants, and the clips with your son. They added emphasis to what you were speaking about and were not a distraction. It may have been accidental, but I was also very shocked today during the morning service when I realized that throughout the entire service, no one took a moment to pray. I felt that having 9,000 teenagers gathered at dare2share to worship Christ and to learn more about how to be a “leader”, prayer should have been the “leaders” of dare2share’s main focus. I can not begin to explain to you how I felt about Hawk Nelson’s appearance. I was in total shock at the way they were acting at a Christian Convention. Our youth group lives by the memory verse Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is of good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Overall I learned alot through this conference. Please email back.

    • I have to agree with Katelin, the girl who commented before me. Dare2Share was an amazing experience. I learned many new things and became closer to God. D. Gray was amazing, your messages really made me think about what is important in life, and Lincoln Brewster did a wonderful job along with the Washington Projects. But, i did feel as if some of the things were hindering me from feeling God’s Presence there. Some of the movie clips were inappropriate. They distracted me and kept me from focusing on the message and what God was trying to do in my life. And I, too, noticed that we did not pray during the entire morning service on the second day. We should have been praying during every spare minute, especially since we were about to go door to door. But, something that really let me down was Hawk Nelson’s appearance. When I hear them on the radio, i think they are amazing and their music really relates to me. But when they walked on stage, i didn’t feel that at all. I still loved Dare2Share and the whole experience. It was amazing and i feel much closer to God now.

I understand alot about the things around “Compassion” and all and i think we do need to help but when you have 9000 plus teens that cant even afford a hamburger and they get to the conf after spending x amount of dollars then return home with a packet that will cost that family 32 dollars a month, it doesnt seem like alot but for most after all thats given threw the year the last thing our families need is to feel guilty about not being able to send the money. teenagers for the most part dont have the money mom and dad does.I promise to you i dont meen to be critical it was just to much. Greg if you are reading this I believe in you,I met you at conclave in Chattanoga about three years ago and as a speaker and teacher God has his hand on you. But where are you at, in all this( nothing seemed to mesh ). Bro. Mark Hayes Woodland Mills FBC
