Things are a changin’ at Dare 2 Share

Posted on Sunday 7 June 2009 by Greg @ 7:46 am
    Filed under: Rants

I feel like one of the luckiest men on earth (“on earth…on earth…”) to work with a ministry like Dare 2 Share. Sometimes I pinch myself. Mobilizing teenagers across the United States to relationally and relentlessly share the good news of Jesus is truly an awe-inspiring privilege. I get spoiled with story after story of youth group after youth group that is growing deeper and going wider as a result of the training conferences or one of the GOSPEL Journey Reality Series or somethig D2Sish. It humbles me and makes me very grateful.

But it’s not enough. There are 83 million people in America under the age of 19 that must be reached and then mobilized with the gospel before its too late.

A week or so ago I caught just a few minutes of the MTV Music Awards. During those few minutes I watched the “Bruno” prank (Bruno is an overtly gay character portrayed by the same guy who brought Borat to the world.) His little schtick/skit/prank with Eminem made me sick and got me ticked. I wasn’t angry with them or MTV, after all a dog’s gonna bark and sinners are gonna sin.

Instead I got angry with myself.

To be honest I don’t feel like I, Dare 2 Share, or the church for that matter, has done nearly enough to stem the rising tide of hedonism in this nation. It’s moving from bad to worse to “worser”. And before it hits “worsest” things have got to change.

And when I say change I’m not at all talking about the culture wars. Christians who spend their time raging against the machine are wasting their time. We are not going to be able to legislate, protest or picket our way out of this one. This world is on the highway to hell and there’s no stopping them with the arm of the flesh. Sorry people but it looks like we are going to have to bust out the weapons of righteousness…stuff like prayer, loving our enemies, living the truth and proclaiming the gospel.

I’m going old school with this one but bear with me because it’s the same kind of old school approach the believers in the early New Testament took to transforming their culture. If you read the Gospels closely you’ll see that Jesus never advocated a political or moral approach to changing the Roman Empire. And talk about depraved! The Roman culture of unrestrained naughtiness would make Bruno blush.

But Jesus launched a different kind of revolution. His was a revolution that centered around the transformation of the internal which would lead to a transformation of the external. In other words the plan of Jesus was to change the world through the good news of the gospel delivered through the lives and the lips of his followers.

Now you may be thinking “well isn’t that what Dare 2 Share has been doing for the last 18 years?” Yes but in the last twelve months our cause has become clearer than ever: to mobilize teenagers on every high school and middle school campus in America to reach and then mobilize their friends to reach and mobilize their friends until every teenager in this nation hears the gospel from a teenager they know and trust.

Maybe you’re wondering if this means that Dare 2 Share is getting into campus ministry. The answer is yes and no. Yes in the sense that we are going to challenge and equip youth leaders to mobilize teenagers for evangelism at every school in their community. But no in the sense that we are not advocating another campus ministry model. Instead we are pushing a strategy that any teenager, group of friends or campus ministry can employ at their own school.

This strategy is a teen-to-teen evangelism plan rather than an “invite them to a meeting where an adult can reach them” plan because we believe that the best one to reach teenagers with the gospel is a teenager they know and trust. Sure, inviting them to a meeting may be a part of that process but it is the teenager who drives the gospel-centered conversation before, during and after that invitation. The goal is lunch room, hallway, afterschool, Facebook/MySpace conversations led by fully motivated and fully equipped teenagers.

Fear not homeschoolers and Christian schoolites, you can participate in this strategy too! Because it is a friend-centric strategy all you need is some unreached friends (online friends, sports leagues, extended family members, neighborhood teenagers, etc.) Pop the bubble my young friends and engage. Somebody once told me that a homeschooler that doesn’t share his/her faith is like a Ferrari that you keep locked away in the garage.

Its time to revv up and peel out.

We are calling this big, hairy, audacious goal “THE Cause” because we believe it is, at it’s core, the Great Commission given to us by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20. As LeCrae raps, “One teach…two teach…three teach…four…disciple cycles who make disciples.” We are truly becoming Dare 2 Share, not in the cold calling “jack you upside the head” with the gospel type of way, but in the being witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria type of way.

Today’s teens are into causes (environmental, social justice, etc) and this is the cause of causes. It is the cause of giving teenagers purpose now and heaven later. It is the cause of saving them from the hell they are headed to and the hell they are going through. It doesn’t get anymore urgent than that.

I believe that the upcoming Blaze conference, starting November 6 and 7 in Denver, Colorado, will feel more revolutionary than any D2S conference of the past. Teenagers will start doing THE Cause before they ever leave the event. By the time they pile on buses to go home they will already be well on their way to reaching and mobilizing their friends with and for the gospel. Youth leaders will be on their way to seeing this God-give initiative (aka “The Great Commission”) become a reality in their own communities.

What’s really fun is that this is a cause that youth leaders can accomplish with their own style, flair, imprint and pace. This is a cause that everyone can do, speak into and improve.

We don’t have all of the strategy and tactics for THE Cause figured out on purpose. Although, by God’s grace, we are going to have the basic tools and strategy to launch this initiative we are going to depend our champions (sold out youth leaders, students, volunteers and donors) to help us figure it out on the ground. We are going to elicit feedback and build the full strategy based on the input that we get back from those who are actually carrying it out.

To mobilize teenagers on every high school and middle school in America is no small feat. It is sobering to realize that there are over 67,000 schools that fit this category. It is such a big mission that we are convinced that we are not the ones who can accomplish it…the youth leaders, students and adults who buy off on THE Cause are. What we are fitted to do, by God’s grace, is to inspire these champions and arm them with the tools to carry it out.

What do we need? We need wisdom. We need money. We need champions. In other words we need you. Check out the Get Involved section of the Dare 2 Share website to see how you can get involved right away with mobilizing teenagers. Signing up for Mission Mobilize is a start. Prayers and donations are appreciated as well.

If you want to find out more about THE Cause make sure you sign up to bring your teenagers to The Dare 2 Share “Blaze” Tour this upcoming school year. That’s when we will officially unleash the idea and strategy to youth leaders and students. By God’s grace we will unleash it nationally a year later.

    Sign up and stay tuned.

Bruno and Eminem watch out. Some teenager you know may be trying to reach you with the gospel soon.

    Signed, Greg Stier

        Hey Paul,

Funny you should mention that. We actually have gone international…but quite slowly. Last year Dare 2 Share Korea got started and we are working hard on building a template for International ministry. The way we are working it in Korea is that there was another group (Seoul USA) that wanted to launch D2S Korea so we equipped them and they did it. It is being run by South Koreans (which I love!) They are using the D2S tools and strategies but contextualized to S. Korea. What we are working hard on now is an official liscensing/charter agreement that our board can embrace so that we go international in the right way at the right time. We plan on being reactive instead of proactive in going international in the first few years here. One reason is that we want to build a template that is Spirit-led and as effective as possible. The other reason is that we want to make sure THE Cause is rocking here and that the kinks are worked out first before we go full throttle into International ministry. I know too many stateside guys who have gone international for the thrill of it and have greatly diminished their work in the United States. Pray with us that God will give us the wisdom, resources and perfect timing to move at the pace He has for us. If it were up to me we would have launched internationally a long time ago and it would have probably landed with a great big thud. But in God’s timing it could be a wonderfully effective thing.

Keep up the great work in N.Ireland Paul and thanks for the encouragment!

      • Hey this is great!

In the seattle area, there is a mission ministry called youthmark and the founder, Brian Aaby, has been pushing a similar model. He is all about teen to teen evangelism. He even started his first phase which is FOF- which stands for Faith on Facebook. (you can change it to FOM or FOT depending on what social network you use) but basically it is donating your facebook status to reaching out.

Usually it is something like “Ask me about my FOF challenge” and the responses are incredible and its got many teens openly sharing Jesus across facebook. I think THE CAUSE is also going to be eye opening to how teens can effectively and openly share Jesus to their peers!

        Thanks Greg

      • Awesome thinking guys. Will push the same line of thinking through the youth group here in Chicago. FOF.. Love these on going creative segways to share Christ to a hurting and lost society.

Side note. Went to Dare2share conference for the first time and we were able to bring 38 youth. We have been going door to door and walking the community for over a year now. Honestly not with great results. I mean we were bold and would pray for people and share our faith in a very limited manner. God’s presence would drop down on us as a confirmation that we were doing the correct thing. Always walked away feeling we could have done better and just not knowing how. The desire to obey the great commission was burning in the core group for some time. So we would just keep knocking on doors and inviting people to church and telling them Jesus loved them. The passion was in us and we would just keep meeting and praying and asking God to train us and help us. Than a door opened and we went to Dare2share. Our ability to now engage and ask thought provoking questions and causing people to think in a non condeming way is just awesome. It was in us all the time, but seeing it spelled out and with the invincible guide as a on going teaching tool was an explosive dynamic event in our core group. The youth group is growing deeper in their relation with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We are Podcasting from the Dare2share websight like crazy.

We have purchased materials and will continue to share our faith as we grow deeper and take it wider.

Another side note: Greg can you create a traing tool where we can role play to build each other up with over coming the walls of doubt with unbelievers and how to build our confidence up. We are looking to fast track our ability to share Jesus more effectively. We are all reading share you faith but just want more. We can’t get enough.

Thank God for your ministy, faithfulness and passion.
See you in October at the Leaders meeting.

        Gnaring WOGY style…

Great idea on the role playing tool Craiger! I’ll forward it on to our training department. Always looking for more ways to effectively train and, beside evangelism itself, role playing is the next best thing.

      • Hi Greg. I read your “Does Street Evangelism Work?” article yesterday and this blog post seemed to float some similar thoughts so I hope it’s ok if I respond here. I have to admit that in my ten years of youth ministry, I’ve stayed away from D2S because of my perception of the “cold-turkey” non-relational evangelism that seemed to be promoted. I’ve never been comfortable putting a premium on getting conversions at the expense of making disciples, so I’ve tended to focus more on the relational side and have been weaker when it comes to the relentless pursuit of the lost. But I love the way you’re responding to Roose’s experiment – your four thoughts to wrap up the article are great. Looking forward to seeing how this all gets fleshed out…

Learning to be relational AND relentless,

        Hey Mike,

Thanks for your comment and your honesty. Your prayers are appreciated as we seek to figure this whole thing out. It seems to me that the relational/relentless grid really helps to clarify what God is guiding us toward. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. Hopefully it leads to more effective evangelism and longterm discipleship!

        Thanks again.

I saw an MTV prank on the Mike and Juliete morning show…. it made me sick.

The book I’m reading has a good question to ask people when sharing Jesus. It was “Is there any good reason why you would not accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior?” The book is called “How to share your faith” by Greg Laurie. He said something like share your own story becuase no one has a story quite like mine or yours and he said to not over glorify the past or exaggerate. Sometimes there’s that temptation to exaggerate on how bad we were and make things sound worse than they truly were…and to make a beeline to the cross. The apostale Paul always made a ‘beeline to the cross’ in sharing his testimony.

Its a really helpful book [:

I’m also reading a book titled “Questioning Evangelism” and “Christianity In Crisis: 21st Century” they all are really good books…

I read in the first book that most people don’t reject what’s in the box (the gospel), they reject the wraping paper (how we present the gospel to them)…we really need to watch how we present the gospel to people.

there’s another book that I really want and its titled “The Hole In Our Gospel” the description I read of it, sounded pretty good. It’s probably whats on the back of it. I love the last part of the description that says “two thousand years ago, tweleve men changed the world. I believe it can happen again.” (I found the book on http://www.mardel.com along with all the other books)

We need a R.I.O.T (Righteous Invasion Of Truth).

Another book that’s really good is titled Do Hard Things: A teenage rebellion against low expectations might be able to help you. It seems like society is getting (or most likly already there) to the point where they expect less from teens than toddlers….

I memorized what’s on the back of the book. It says; Most people don’t expect you to understand what we’re going to tell you in this book. And even if you understand, they don’t expect you to care. And even if you care, they don’t expect you to do anything about it. And even if you do something about it, they don’t expect it to last. WE DO.

Most people don’t even expect us to be capable of having an intelligent conversation with an adult.

What does the Bible have to say about teens? Nothing. The word teenager is only 70 years old.

        their site; http://www.therebultion.com

        Hope I helped. AGAIN [:

        And I thought I’d never get caught reading a book… [:

        I found one more book.
Title; 21 Things God Never Said:Correcting Our Misconceptions about Evangelism

        Description:
“If you don’t know the date you were saved, then you’re not saved.”
“When you miss an opportunity to share Christ with someone, it’s your fault if that person goes to hell.”

Not true, says veteran evangelist and teacher Larry Moyer. God never said many of the things we believe about evangelism. In this practical book, Moyer dispels twenty-one common misconceptions Christians have as they evangelize. With biblical principles and practical suggestions, he helps us learn to witness out of grace, not guilt.

“Salvation is free, yet it did not come without a great cost. Salvation is also simple, yet many believers struggle because they add requirements that are not found in Scripture. Larry Moyer does a superb job challenging these misconceptions, freeing God’s children to fully abound in His grace.” –Jack Eggar
President and CEO, Awana Clubs International

        R. Larry Moyer (Th.M., Dallas Theological Seminary) is president and CEO of EvanTell, Inc., an evangelistic association in Dallas, Texas, and a frequent speaker in evangelistic outreaches, training seminars, and classrooms across the country. His other books include Free and Clear, Larry Moyer’s How-To Book on Personal Evangelism, Thirty-One Days with the Master Fisherman, and Welcome to the Family.

I wish I would have posted this earlier, but I totally forgot about the book. Sorry Greg about not posting it earlier. [[:

Quick question; Will you (and everyone who reads this) pray for my Dad? I shared Jesus with him in april…I missed school to do so. I gave him my Bible that my gma gave me, I highlighted ALOT of things in there. I shared my testimony with him and gave him three page letter completly filled with Jesus. I remember putting this saying in there; “If you were the only person on earth, Jesus would have still went to the cross for you.” I gave him a list of great christian songs. Like Hold On- 33Miles, Hold Fast- MercyMe and This Is Now- 33Miles, The Space In Between Us- Building 429 and a boatload of more songs. I also gave him a bookmark that I got in Springfield,MO over spring break. I’m trying not to cry. The box I used to put all of this in, was the box that had my casts in it. I was born with clubed feet… and my mom has always told me that I hold a special place in my dads heart. I was fatherless growing up… (I had to go to the bathroom and I had to cry. I couldn’t hold it in any longer after I said the words) My parents have been basically seperated since the summer of last year; and they have been divorced since May 8th 2009. It hurts. alot. The song I’m listening to is helping. (No One Else Knows- Building 429) I wish Jesus would just ‘put skin on’. I mean just Jesus…not anyone else.

Psalm 68:5 “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.”

I think I’m going to go read my writing that is based on the song No One Else Knows that I posted on my site… when you click on my name it goes to my site (:

I got my dad something in branson, missouri last year in the summer. And it was a stuffed animal… I was going to get him something nascary but I decided he has too much nascar things. So I went with something special… I saw him July 5th at his work. and I forgot to bring it with me. And Kayce (my annoying sister whoes moving out in 2 weeks because me and my mom are moving just as last summer) said to me, “I’ll tell dad what you got him if you don’t tell me what you got Jacob for his birthday.” He got a little license plate that was patriotic with his name on it. I told my sister no and left it at that. She told me she wouldn’t tell jacob…I didn’t trust her at all and I still don’t. When we got to his work, kayce told him what I got him.. and as if it weren’t bad enough already, she adds if you don’t want it, I’ll take it. (He even looked like he wanted it) Like I would dare give that to her after what she did to me… I’m not going to lie here, I really do hope someone treats her the exact same way she treated me. I wasn’t feeling mad, I was more on the betrayed and hurt side. Before she told him, I was fearing rejection from him for the thousandth time. and it doesn’t get easier at handling rejection. I haven’t given it to him yet, but will you (and everyone who reads this) please pray that when I do give it to him, he won’t reject it…

and please pray that my mom will get approved for the apartment we want to move into… the credit part has been approved.. but things can change. And if they do change, the house we’re in will probably be submitted to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. And if they don’t change, I get to be the “New Kid” at a new high school. Pray that I will make it through a new high school…. at least the people will most def. know that I love Jesus, if not anything else.

Pray that my dad will accept Jesus. I asked if he had been reading the bible i gave him and he said a little. and then I asked about the papers I gave him and he said yes.

95% of Christians have never led anyone to Christ. I don’t want to any longer be in the 95%…

In fact, we’re pretty much abandoned outreach events altogether because of some of the things it unintentionally teaches our teenagers. Instead, the “go wide” of our ministry is to constantly push kids to “just bring God up” in their conversations.

      • Hey, again. [:

I found this helpful evangelism website a few hours ago. I hope it’ll help you out. [[:

        http://www.effective-evangelism-training.org/

We need to get back to the basics.

I was watching Trading Spouses earlier today and the lady that was on there is a Christian and she did a very poor job of sharing the gospel… she kept saying this, “Trust in God” “trust in God. Please, please.” She failed to share with them why they should trust in God. She seemed religious. And she did too much attacking and not hardly enough attracting them to Jesus. I think I sometimes do too much attacking and forget that the fight isn’t against flesh and blood. At the end of the show, that lady went CRAZY! She ripped up the $50,000 check because the other mom was “dark-sided.” The ‘dark-sided’ lady seemed awhole lot nicer than the christian lady. If she would have read it, (the check) she would have though differently about it… what in the world happened with showing the love of Jesus?

Since I’ve started reading Christianity In Crisis, I question everyones beliefs. What those people in that book believe is way to farfetched. Like, Jesus wore designer clothes and had a mansion and was rich along with the 12. Jesus did wear “designer” clothes…they were designed by somebody. Whether they were up-to-date is another story!! And someone in the book believes that by smacking people in the face, kicking people in the face and in the gut with a knee will “heal” them from what they are hurting from. I’d rather suffer with what ever I’d have than be smacked in the face, kicked in the face or in the gut. This guy only did it to them because “God” said to do it. Oh, and he threw a child on the ground because she was/is crippled. What kind of “god” would tell him that?! If that’s what it takes to get healed, I’ll pass on the offer. I laughed so hard I cried when I read it… it may have been funny, but people truly believe this crazy things!!
& when he kicked the guy in the gut, he said, “you may be feeling a bit more pain right now….cancer is spirit and we have to draw it out.” Since when did healing become painful?!! And when did cancer become a “spirit”?!!
The people and their farfetched beliefs are Joyce Meyer,Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, some other guy named Kenneth, John Hegge and many more.
I’ve watched Joel before, whether I believed what he said or not is another story… I could never watch Joyce for some reason, now I know why!! I’ve watched John before. My grandparents like him… and when I told my gma he’s in the book she looked at me like I was crazy. The author says these crazy cultic beliefs have snuck their way in to the Body Of Christ…and clearly they have. We need to do what mascuitos (i suck at spelling sometimes!) do when one of their ‘members’ gets killed, they go out and find what ever it is and attack it… I feel like I just contradicted myself but I really didn’t. I know what I mean, I just don’t know how to explain it clearly.

(about the crazy lady, if I were an un-believer and I met her, I’d question Christianity and it’s claims alot harder…I’d probably be thinking ‘if that’s what happens after becoming a christian, i’ll stay an un-believer! and I’d probably say to her, “If I truly believed that, I’d be crawling on broken glass to tell everyone about it.”)
