    The Truth about Greg!

Posted on Thursday 27 April 2006 by Lane @ 1:52 pm
    Filed under: Rants

So here I was, just a 17 year old skinny Christian teen in middle class Arvada, Colorado (just west of Denver). I had trusted Christ a few years back, but my Christian life just seemed to be missing something. I went to church basically every time the doors were opened, but that was more about hot girls than being on fire for God.

Then there was the youth group meeting that changed everything.

Our youth pastor named Clay Stone (no really – that’s his name) announced that we had a guest speaker for the night. Oh great – says I to myself…prepare for 40 minutes of mind numbing Bible thumping from some adult in the church who thinks they can ‘preach’.

But no…before us stood yet another 17 year old skinny Christian teen from middle class Arvada, Colorado (just west of Denver in case you missed it). His name was Greg Stier (pronounced ‘steer‘, but moooving right along), and he came right out of the stall (hehe) with an in-your-face-get-right-with-God-share-your-faith challenge…

Sound familiar? Well it didn’t to me. Sure, we ‘talked’ about ‘talking about’ our faith with our unsaved friends, but that’s as far as it ever went…talking about it. This was something completely different. This Greg Stier character was insisting that we actually do it! And he even had Bible verses and stuff to back it up!

But Greg – says I to myself – I really want to, but I have no clue how to…so I’m off the hook, right?

Wrong. Almost as if he read my mind (maybe he can?!? Whoa!) he then laid out a simple method for sharing our faith. I stood there mesmerized by this simple yet crystal clear way of telling people the greatest news on planet earth.

By the end of the meeting it wasn’t about hot girls anymore, it was about lost friends and the reality of hell. I went up to Greg after the meeting, introduced myself, and asked if he wanted to hang out sometime. His response?

"Sure – let’s hang out this Friday at the mall where we can witness to the teens that hang out every weekend."

I know that doesn’t come as a surprise to you, but I was surprised at that moment to learn the truth about Greg. The boy was, is, and always will be flat out on fire for God and broken hearted for the lost. The infectious attitude of a 17 year old shifted the course of my life nearly 25 years ago…which is one reason I’m proud to still be serving side by side with one of the great evangelists of our generation at Dare 2 Share ministries.

    Care to join us?

Note: Lane Palmer will be guest blogging on Greg’s blog from time to time. You can look forward to some great "Greg Stories" and also passionate insight into God’s word relative to day to day living. Lane has been on staff at Dare 2 Share Ministries for over 5 years as the Youth Ministry Specialist. His focus is developing resources for youth leaders and students to assist them in the trenches of ministry.

    Signed, Greg Stier

      • Isn’t that always the first impression? "Oh yeah, Some dude named Greg Steir is going to preach our ears off and tell us the same ‘ol thing. Go tell people the good news, good bye!" And then he always seems to prove us wrong.  He turns out to be funny, cool, and strangly energetic. Next thing you know you’re getting into it and you’re like, "Man, I want to be able to go out and tell people about God really easily like him. To bad I don’t know how." Then he says, "Okay, so most of you are like sure I’d like to do that, but too bad I don’t know how. (I’m with you, Lane, that guy can seriously read minds.) So memorize this, G: God created us to be with Him. O:Our sins seperate us from God. S: Sins cannot be removed by good deeds. P:Paying the price for our sins Jesus died and rose again. E: Everyone who trusts in Him alone will have eternal life. L: Life that’s eternal means we will be with Jesus 4-ever!" (all you D2S ppl know what I’m talkin’ about.) And you are like, (As you study furiously for a minute.) "Oh my gosh! This guy is crazy! Does he expect me to do this?" Well, you’ll find out this Jesus loving, raving lunatic does expect you too. The weird thing is, I can say that G.O.S.P.E.L. thing inside and out now. He bashed it into my mind and now I dream about it. (No I’m kidding. I do have weird dreams about nunchucks though. weird, huh? Don’t know where that came from.) But now that I know it I’m prepared to use it and maybe, just maybe, I’ll have some people think, "Oh my gosh! This chick is crazy! I should ask her why…" And then they’ll find out that I’m a Jesus loving, raving luntic. Signing Off, Ashley

      • im not surprised about greg.  he rocks my socks off.  i seriously was changed when i went to dare2share.  i became a loser.  i didnt get to meet greg but i could tell he was the same person no matter where he was and was always that jesus-loving raving lunatic.  that rocks.  not very many people are that way anymore but we can make it happen.  we can make people want to trust in christ and make them want to share it with their friends or even strangers at the mall.  when we went door to door i was so scared.  we had to actually say something.  but you get that adrenaline rush and it is awesome.  you realize that god is always there with you and loves you so much so why not talk about it?!  dare2share was awesome for more than one reason.  i not only became a loser but i got to know so many people in my uth group and i even got to know these two dudes(sorta).  they just walked up and were like,"do you have a dollar?"  and my friend said,"yea…why?"  they got this weird look on their face and said,"we’ll give you 75 cents for a dollar and give you a show too."  we were like,"okay, what show?"  we stood there and they just busted out in napoleon dynamite crazyness.  it rocked and me and my friend walked off laughing so hard and they got their dollar.  anyways its always good when you know you have other dudes and chicks out there backin you up and wanting to make you want to make others want to trust in christ and share about it.  thats all i got right now.  rock on, darci….and watch out for the penguins(dont ask)

      • Hi Greg, My name is Samantha, and this isn’t really about this topic but I really wanted to share this with you (& everyone i suppose haha). I went to D2S in 2006 thinking oh this is probly gonna be kinda..well….cheesey. Oh-Boy! Let me tell you what. I left Colombus soo excited! I had a blast. I just recently got home from Colombus again for 2007’s D2S, I had an even BETTER time. I LOVE LOVE LOVE coming to this conference. I go to New York every Christmas break for a youth convention similar to this. I don’t know if you have ever heard of it but its called Joshua Revolution. There’s alotttttttttt of kids that go to it also. I think a little more than what was at D2S. I have also been to, more of a concert, in Kings Island. (in ohio) And I still think that Dare2Share is the absolute best. I can relate most to it and I have fun while being there too. Joshua Revolution is harder to understand, but when I listen to you speak its soo much clearer for me. You tell stories that are similar to what I go through. The drama this year was so… oh my gosh, there are no words for it. It was amazing though. I can also relate to that too. Well except for the whole dying part haha. My youth leader, Scot, bought the whole "Go Wide" thing and I can’t wait! I go to First Christian Church in Sandusky and Our youth group in the past years has just been getting smaller and smaller. It’s tough. We have five girls in our youth group and that is all there is. But the good thing is that we all came to D2S and we plan on it again. We love d2s so much. We wish it was longer. we got done last night and said "Noooo!!! Its over!" lol. It’s also VERY hard for me to bring my friends to things like this and to church. Not because of "daring to share" with them, simply because they say no. and I really dont know what to do about it. I try so hard and they seem like they are making excuses, but I cant say they are for sure because I dont know that, but its hard. Well Greg, I just wanted to let you in on that and let you know that dare2share is amazing and its helps me alot and I cant wait for next years!! I will get in touch some other time. <3Sam

      • dear greg, this is the 3rd time i have tried to write to you because every time i do there is an error!!!!!!!!!!!! ok first of all, i enjoyed d2s because i could understand it!!! you take things that are hard for me to understand and make them into things that me, a preteen, can understand. i am the girl who sat next to mackenzie, the one you gave a dollar to. i took the 48 hour challenge. i told my friend ash, from london, about my trip. i said what do you think about god? he didn’t say anything. i asked do you believe that he died on the cross for our sins? he said no, i believe we are envious of his powers. i was a little upset that he doesn’t belive jesus died for our sins. i told him that it was ok and i would still be his friend because i didn’t want him to get the wrong idea. i told him i was getting baptized. he said baptized?? what is that? i was surprized. i told him it was when you choose to become a follower of god. he said nope i havn’t been baptized. so if you greg, and the people who read this could pray for ash to become a christian and go to heaven. also could you pray for me to have the courage to tell him more about god and so that i can also have the courage to get baptized soon.  i am looking foward to going to d2s next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!                                         josie

Taylor then says hey ask Robin the question. i’m thinking ok. so i ask my friend robin if she was positive that she was going to heaven. she said she didn’t know. when i was about to tell her the gospel the bell rang. Lunch was over but i said to robin that i want to talk to her after school.so after school i start to talk to her again. after roughly going over the gospel she started to talk to me about what she believed. it was mostly about the last days on earth. it was really confussing but i listened. When she was done i told her i would like her to read revalations. She owns a bible. i said i would read it too and we could discuss it tomorrow. While this was happen my friend Talyor came up with one of her friends and said she wants to know how to get to heaven. I’m thinking wow this is amazing. So i talked with her too. None of them have put there faith in christ but i’m definitly going to talk to them tomorrow so please pray for me.

      • I use to go to D2S every year. I started when my older brother was old enough to go and I stopped going around the time I was 16, so that was a good 4 or 5 years. I am now an 18 year old single mom living with my parents.  I was working part time for California Cafe in the park meadows mall back in May. Greg Steir came and had lunch there and before he left he gave me a DVD for the next D2S coming up for colorado. I was very giggly when I got the chance to talk with him. FUNNY STORY. I was the hostest and when I was seating someone else, I saw Greg coming back from the Bathroom.. (If you’ve been to D2S you probably know that Greg hates public bathrooms. Problem with a prank from a buddy named Art. HAHA. So I laughed to myself knowing he was just washing his hands. lol) He was almost to his table and I stopped him and asked if I could ask him something. He was laughing and asked if he was in trouble. I laughed back and said I hopped not. I finally got a chance to ask. I said, "I know this sounds weird, but.. Are you greg Steir?" He kinda smiled and said yes. I giggled and told him that I couldn’t believe he was having lunch at my job. I went back and bragged to all my co-workers that I knew who he was and he was at table 72 in front of the kitchen!! Everyone laughed at me and wanted to know why I was so nervious around some guy named Greg. They thought I had a crush on him. It gave me a chance to share my faith.  Watching the DVD that Greg gave me made me realize that my life had gotten away from me. I did things, and was in a pratice of living a life that was not what God wanted, or what I needed. I ended up pregnant. I was already 6 months along and not showing when I met Greg. It’s weird how seeing Greg made me feel guilty about being pregnant. It was more of my life style. I felt like Greg was wearing Jesus that day and pretty much knew that I needed that DVD.  I moved back home to live with my christian family. My parents forgave me for turning my back on them and God. I was fired from the Cafe. Probably for walking by Greg’s table so much that day. Just kidding. I am now dating a single christian parent. We are both planning on going to D2S this coming november and most likely bringing our young children.  WE CAN’T WAIT!!

I remember you! I’m so proud of you that you are seeking the Lord again. God is the great Forgiver of our souls through Jesus Christ. Who would have thought that bumping into you that day during the lunch rush would lead to it all. Praise the Lord.

On another note I am the product of a single parent upbringing (I was born out of wedlock.) While it’s not God’s best, it is what it is. Now you have the opportunity to bring that baby up in an atmosphere drenched in God’s presence and principles. God’s love covers a multitude of our sins.

Keep your eyes on him as you raise this precious baby to know and love Jesus! I’m proud of you!

God has blessed Boe (now married), Kelsie Kay (now 20 and georgeous on the inside and out), and myself (still working at Deer Flat Church in full time Children’s Ministry, and yes . . . married)in such amazing ways.  HE IS FAITHFUL TO THOSE THAT ARE FAITHFUL.   You left a print on my heart, and the heart of thousands of kids.  Love and Prayers, Julie (Benefield) Walker

At my first Dare2Share I was a little skeptical, but as the night wore on I had no doubts. The weekend rocked! I’m getting ready to go to my 3rd Dare2Share now, and I can’t wait. Also, last year my friends Taylor, Jessi and I all got a picture of him. He was so nice to us!

        So thanks Greg!

      • In 2005, Starbucks Coffee started producing a cup with the following quote written on it:

“The Way I See It # 43, My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don’t make that mistake yourself. Life’s too short.” – Armistead Maupin

This, along with many other cups having various quotations on them, began to stir controversy for obvious reasons. So, what does Live Offensively have to say about this? How should genuine warriors for Christ engage this issue?

As much as we sympathize with any and all people who are being unjustly treated in society – including the gay community – this move on behalf of Starbucks revealed the beginning of a more focused agenda. Around that same time (Fall of 2005) Starbucks appeared under the “proud sponsors” list of corporations on the Planned Parenthood website. Even more revealing, the Seattle Post Intelligent Reporter unveiled Starbucks involvement during Gay-Pride week where ” About 75 Starbucks employees will march in the parade and will wear T-shirts in rainbow colors with the word “PRIDE” on the front … A van from the coffee company will follow them. On Capitol Hill tomorrow, Starbucks employees at the company’s three stores there will pass out samples of Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino.”

As Christians, we should refuse to support social structures, corporate entities, and businesses that reflect clear ungodliness and oppressive ways of gaining profit. God abhors those who oppress and suppress the voice of the needy. Unfortunately, most people don’t think of the unborn as needy people, when in reality, 1 out of every 4 babies born dies due to abortion. Alas, the womb of the mother should be the safest, most secure place on earth. But because of abortion, it is one of the most dangerous places to be! The Bible is filled with Scripture calling us to protect the weak, innocent, and needy. Who is more needy and unable to protect themselves from their mothers than the babies awaiting the abortion chambers?

Homosexuality? God has spoken clearly and repeatedly on the subject. He calls it sin.

Believe this or not we too love Starbucks drinks – and also agree that some of the most meaningful discipleship can happen around a cup of over-priced coffee while lounging back in oversized chairs. However, we as a team have been convicted by the fact that Starbucks supports terribly liberal and virtually anti-Christian, anti-Biblical causes with the money that we give them. And so after a year on the Starbucks fast we have decided to share the truth about Starbucks with the world, and just maybe it will persuade them to not support causes that are 100% destructive to our society at large.

I also wittness to the group of teenagers that hang out on the corner across from my house. I buy them a case of soda and tell about Jesus.

      • I just wanted to let youth leaders know how much your kids really need your support. I am a leader of a small group (8) and through the last 3 years of my ministry, I have learned more about myself than I ever expected – just by helping the youth. I can see myself in their eyes – how I struggled with some of their same issues at their age and it really breaks my heart. Why is our world so cruel and why do they have to hurt so much. Its funny, the kids that you think have it “all together” are the ones with the most pains – guess thats where I can see myself – always trying to cover up so no one can see the “real me”.

Well anyway, my advice to you leaders is not to just be their leader, but actually create leaders out of your youth. And it can be done.

Our little youth group (with no $ may I add) did what most would call the “unthinkable”. I am not sure how many of you are familiar with Life Light (it is the most amazing FREE concert weekend you could ever attend in Sioux Falls, SD over Labor Day weekend)…. anyway, last year while we were there, the other leader and myself attend a “tour” meeting – which was a gathering of people who were interested in info on hosting a Life Light gathering… Well, we both had this “push” to go to the meeting – we walked out of there with this overwhelming feeling that this is something that we should go for (remember, we had NO Money) – we went home after an amazing weekend of music – and prayer A LOT!!!! well, we decided that we would have to wait until the spring tour to try and get some money raised. In January we actually set our date and had a meer 2 1/2 months to raise $5500… most would think that we were out of our minds (with only 8 kids in a town of 2000 – it can’t be done).. WRONG – with God’s loving hands, we did. Not only did we do it, but we got other area churches involved – just by having the kids be LEADERS – I really don’t think that it has sunk in to them that they were leaders in their own rights – getting other teens to come, putting together a video presentation and taking that presentation on the road – we were at several church, meeting and anywhere we could get our foot in the door – IT WAS AMAZING!!! They each told their own story and showed that they really wanted this – well, we were fortunate enough to not only raise our goal money, but we have enough left over to bring the tour back again next year…. This little group that worked as LEADERS, showing other youth that they loved their Lord, brought in 720+ people to this FREE concert – we wanted to make it free because Jesus already paid the ultimate price for us, why should we charge others to get to know HIM!!!.

Anyway, I guess my point is this, don’t feel like you can’t do things to encourage your kids (and don’t think that you have to do something like this either) all I am saying is that you have to have faith #1 in your kids and love ‘em like Jesus and #2 ask them how they would like things done – give them their time to talk – we have “open mic” which was probably the coolest things we could have added to our group – they get a chance to talk about whatever they want – no judgments, lots of tears and hugs, but total understanding for their issues and problems – like I have told them – I don’t have all the answers, but I will do my best to find them – or we all look up the biblical answers in the bible. It is a great learning tool.

I hope that I have helped someone… If at any time you would want to chat, please feel free to email me – ising1968@gmail.com Thank you for letting me “blog”….May Christ always be in your heart…. Jodie
