The Tornado that almost got us

Posted on Wednesday 19 March 2008 by Greg @ 5:59 am
Filed under: Rants

On March 14th at 9:45pm a Tornado tore apart downtown Atlanta. Out of the 150 million + worth of damage the majority was inflicted on The Georgia World Congress Center.

Seven days earlier Dare 2 Share was doing our “Survive” conference (a whole new meaning to the word “Survive”) at this convention center with almost 6,000 teenagers. If that tornado had happened exactly one week earlier we would have literally been finishing up our drama when the storm tore through the building we were in.

I can’t even imagine if that would have happened. Before the drama finished. Before the gospel was given. Before the response time. To me the real trauma would not be in the swirling debris but not being able to drive home the point of the entire evening…Jesus.

“Thank you Lord for protecting the teens who attended the Survive tour in Atlanta from this tragedy. May you use this tornado to remind them that you are God and that you are in charge. We pray for the people who were hurt by this storm. Heal them quickly and use this to draw them closer to yourself. You are God and we are in awe of you.”

And thank you all you prayer warriors out there. You prayers are doing more than resulting in lives changed and souls saved. They are protecting us from the tornados (both literally and figuratively) that are seeking to destroy this ministry.

Signed, Greg Stier

    • The first thing I thought of when I saw the news was thankfulness it was a week later. I know the conference has impacted so many lives and I’m so thankful it was able to continue without weather.

Even the snow cleared so we could hit the streets. It doesn’t snow in ATL or Georgia that often so we were excited about it but at the same time, we were thrilled when it cleared enough for us to go to homes and share the gospel.

      God is awesome.

    • My parents were at a trade convention in Atlanta in the Georgia World Congress Center. Their convention ended on March first. We were so amazed when we heard of the tornado damage to that building just two weeks later. We were so thankful that it was not the week that they were there. I am so glad that it was not the week that D2S was there either. I will pray for all of those who were affected by this tornado in Atlanta and the surrounding cities.

    • Man, that’s scary. Especially to think that all of the people that got saved that night may have died not knowing Christ. It makes you realize how much God really is watching over us, and how much we need to be witnesses. WOW.

    • We were both at the meeting in Atlanta. It was amazing… and to think that if the tornado did hit sometime in the program, getting all of those teenagers out of the building to somewhere safe threw those tiny doors would have been… well.. lets just say bad. I [[Katie]] had accepted Christ later that second day, and if it hadn’t happened or the tornado just blew threw the building before that ever happened, I probably wouldn’t be anything like I am now, and I wouldn’t have gotten my friends to accept Christ either. This really does show us what God is all about, and it shows He’s always watching and protecting the people He cares about, it shows there is someone up there always looking out. Theres much more we could state about this, but sometimes, a good story is just enough to get someone riled up about Christ.
Because of D2S Chelsea and I accepted Christ fully into our lives and we are willing to make changes. We were Baptized [[dunked]] the next Sunday. We haven’t regreted the choice, and never will.

Hope to find everyone unhurt and in the cheery-God-spreading-mood. Go find a friend and tellem you love em.
That if you were there, that you were honestly lucky… because the wall infront of the exit.. was alllllll glass windows. God’s definitely working and watching over us at all times.

Chelsea- Continue to be safe and spread God’s word
Katie- Make sure you check out our church website to see a video from D2S… Great fun [[I fall playing duck duck goose… it’s a must see]] While you’re there… look around and think about coming if you’re in the area of Gwinette GA.

      Much love and respect….
      Katie and her faithful companion…Chelsea.

    • Another cool thing to me is the realization (that we often need) that God has everything in control, even in a possibly horrible sittuation. I pastor the youth at a church in Atlanta and was supposed to be downtown for the basketball games at the Georgia Dome the night the tornado hit. Check this out, the last game of the night has only seconds left and Alabama is at the free throw line. If they make a basket then they go to overtime, if they miss the game is over. The player thankfully makes the basket and the game goes to overtime. With 2:00 minutes left in OT part of the roof comes apart. Think about this, if that player would have missed that free-throw, thousands of people would have been heading for their cars when the tornado hit and we would have seen a catastrophe. One more reason to trust and believe in the God that parts the water, calms the sea, and makes sure games go into OT.

    • As I watched the news about the tornado of how quick and devestating it was, it reminded me of what we heard at the conference about the return of Christ and how we should be living our lives in light of his return.

Just like the tornado warning from the weather service, we have the warning that Christ is coming but we don’t know exactly when and we must be prepared. In the same way must warn those around us of eternal destruction that is coming to those who have not placed their trust in Jesus Christ.

We often forget the danger of a tornado until it hits close to home and in the same way I think we forget the urgency to tell others about Jesus until death hits close to home.

Jesus gave us an early warning system and we should take it even more seriously than a tornado warning!

    • God is AWESOME!! The teens needed to hear what was going to be said in that meeting and because of Him they were able to! I can’t imagine the number of teens who could have been hurt doing the tornado….but thanks be to God…it’s not something we had to witness. It was an awesome weekend and we will be back next year and I’m believing for a busload of kids instead of a van load!

    • Let me just say this… God’s timing is ALWAYS perfect. It is obvious that the teens that attended the Atlanta Dare2Share conference (including my own youth) needed to hear that message. Even the millions of dollars worth of damage won’t make up for the priceless souls that would have been lost had the conference not taken place. Greg, you are AWESOME! I pray that your ministry would grow beyond your imagination! See you next year!!!

    • This is a great example of why we should pray without ceasing and always be listening to the Spirit of God to pray God’s desire into and over the lives of others. Prayer is a powerful tool and humbling gift from our Father that allows us to touch the lives of people we may never meet, sometimes with prayers that make no sense to us, prayers we may never understand. God is on the throne!
