The only New Year’s Resolution that matters

Posted on Tuesday 26 December 2006 by Greg @ 8:36 am
Filed under: Rants

What’s your New Year’s resolution? Having devotions more regularly? Getting a handle on your finances? Dropping that bad habit like a hot potato? Dropping that hot potato with sour cream and extra butter like a bad habit (AKA "losing weight")? The list of potential resolutions goes on and on and on. So what’s yours?

Here’s mine…to grow deeper in my relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ in 2007. The older that I get the more I realize that everything and I mean everything I do flows out of this. The way I treat my wife and kids (and in-laws, outlaws, etc) flows out of my love for Jesus. The way I handle my finances flows out of this. Even what and how much I eat flows out of this (Remember 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.")

I want to know him more, serve him more and tell others about him more often. I want to spend more time in prayer and in his Word. I want him to have full reign in my life on every level.

To be honest the other stuff (handling finances, dropping habits, losing weight, spending more time with family, etc.)  falls into line when we fall in line under his lordship. Let’s serve him together in the New Year. Let’s make our motto, "Livin’ for Heaven in 2007!" That’s the only way we are going to have a truly happy New Year.

Signed, Greg Stier

    • Great perspective, Greg.  I agree completely - aligning ourselves with the Lord and living a life for Him brings other areas of our lives into the right places.

    • Praise God! You’ve probably read it, but for the new year you should pick up My Utmost For His Highest. A truly wonderful daily devotional for 2007. Continue the good work and I’ll keep you in my prayers. Let us both give our utmost for our Lord every day. Wether it be 06, 07 or 36, it matters not to Him. All moments are sacred. And now is the time to rejoice and serve. Blessings to you and your family.

    • I just finished reading OUTBREAK while on "vacation" at my in-laws. It was very much an answer to prayer. I have been praying for awhile now for God to show me why my students are so wrapped up in themselves and not in God. I also was struggling with trying to figure out how to get my students to take some leadership. Through your book and others, and through a lot of prayer and talking to other trusted friends. God has shown me that I have not been expecting enough of my teens. I have not been training my teens, and I have been guilty of filling them with knowledge but not sending them out to win their friends. -Josh

    • Thats a wonderful resolution. It seems like mine is the same every year, but it really should be growing in my relationship with God. Its the only resolution that will make a difference eternally.

    • Greg. I agree. My main goal for 2007 is to just have a better relationship with Lord Jesus Christ. Tell more people about him. That would make a Great and Blessed year! God Bless Brianna

    • That couldn’t be any more true.  I think we all lose sight sometimes when we get caught up in everything we are doing on the day to day.  I know I do, and I hate it when I realize it.  I am going to try my hardest to put everything in God’s hands, and do my best to be a better Christian (especially since I going to the police academy and all).  Your words are inspiring.  God Bless!  William

    • Refections I look back on this yearI know I cried I know I laughed  I know I talked I know I listened  I know I shared I know I loved  I know I grewI know I lived, But did I do it to the fullest? Did I live 100%?  I know I missed out I know I screwed up  I know I made mistakes I know I am human.  Maybe this next year Will be different.  Maybe this next year Things will change  Maybe this next year Could be perfect.   Maybe this next year I will live 100%   Not 100% for Enemies TV Possessions Fights Vices Hate Or School   But 2% for laughter 2% for friends 2% for true life 2% for conversations 2% for joy And 100% for God   All those other things flow from him And in Him I’ll live this year. I’m living for heaven in 2007. THis poem was partly inspired by ur blog! happy new year greg!
