Sleepless in Seattle

Posted on Friday 16 March 2007 by Greg @ 1:12 pm
Filed under: Rants

It’s not just a cliche’.

It’s more than a chick flick.

It was the reality last night.

I couldn’t fall asleep. I’m so excited to be doing a conference this weekend in Seattle. We are holding it at a great church (Overlake Christian Church) that holds up to 5,000. By God’s grace we will be approaching full capacity tonight!

But its not just that we expect a close-to-full-house our second year into Washington that gets me pumped. Its the teenagers here that get me excited. There’s something about these teenagers that is a little more low key, a little more edgy and a little more real.

Maybe its because the Northwest portion of the US is pretty unchurched. This results is more of a blank slate when it comes to spirituality (rather than "I’ve heard it all, been to all the camps, blah, blah, blah") It’s easier to write on a slate that doesn’t have "I love Jesus how ’bout you" religious slogans plastered all over it.

Pray for us as we seek to take the open canvases of the minds and hearts of these teenagers and paint a beautiful picture of Jesus, Judgment Day, the inerrancy of Scripture, the good news of the gospel, the power of loving apologetics and the Great Commission this weekend.

Pray for me to get some sleep while I’m here in Seattle.

Signed, Greg Stier

    • dare to share was amazing this weekend. our youth had just finished the gospel journey the week before, and starting next week we are going through it again to bring our friends. what impacted me the most was the first night…the drama hit hard, but really hit me was when you were speaking about what hidden hurts our friends, and even us as christians go through. you touched on some things that people are afraid to talk about…and that really impacted me. and as for your orlando, fl post. best place ever…to visit. i just moved from there to yakima , wa. hope you got to go to islands of adventure at universal. your son would have loved dr suess land!~!

    • GREG!! This weekend was amazing! I was able to learn soooo much! I have never been so open to spreading the word was I was this weekend. I was just saved in July at Creationfest and no one in my family is Christian. When you gave us the cell phone challenge I was scared but figured might was well try. I called my twin and just spilled everything about what I believed and about the gospel. I think I planted the seed. She was open to hearing about it even though at the end she said she doesnt care I know she listened to what I had to say and is now thinking about all of it. I just love being able to spread the message I am soo pumped to go to school and just open up! I am looking foward to all the conversations I am going to have with my twin thanks to what you have taught me this weekend about how to share.  THANK YOU SO MUCH! Rose

    • Hi Greg, Thanks so much for leading a wonderful and life-changing weekend.  Our youth group just arrived home to Hillsboro this morning (we’re the group that took our pic w/ you last night at the end) tired and bleary-eyed after a long bus ride home.  We broke down in Tacoma and spend a few hours looking for a little spark plug in a closed down town.  It was a great bonding experience full of other little adventures, too, such as helping out a man who was running a gas station in Tacoma that had just burst his apenndix and was refusing medical help as he feared losing his job if he left his post.  We never learned his name but are praying for him.  God definitely had plans for our group last night!  We are so excited to take what we learned and put it into action.  After church this morning, 3 of our high school girls - instead of rushing home to fall into bed - instead decided to go visit a nursing home together.  They told me if they didn’t do it now while they were thinking of it, it probably wouldn’t happen, so today it is!  I am so proud of them.  Well, my eyes are welling up as I type, probably mainly because I need to go get some rest….My husband just walked in to tell me he has many stories to tell of youth that talked to him on the bus ride home about their weekend.  So when I learn more, maybe I’ll share more with you, but for now — sleep!! Thanks again for your heart for youth and passion for the Gospel.  May God bless you and your family and ministry as you continue to take the message to other teens around the country.   Amy H. ~ Westside Bible Fellowship  (P.S. Do let us know if you’re ever coming down here!)  =)

    • Hay Greg, I’m one of those seattle teens you were talking about in your post, now that Dare2Share is over I’ve got to thank you for coming here for the second year in a row.  I went both this year and last year and it was so uplifting.  I’ve been a christian all my life but this year i rededicated my life to Christ.  The drama really go me and a friend thinking.  I’ve particapted in the 48 hour challenge both times and this year i’ve already talked to a person in 24 hours and i plan to talk with another person tomarrow.  At last years conference my church only brought 5 kids, we were hoping to double to 10 kisd this year and ended up having 16 so it was such a blessing.  Next yer we are shooting for tripling our numbers again and bring about 45 kids.  Thank you so much for the oppurtunity.  Can’t wai for next year already.  Hope to see you at creation! :-P

    • This past weekend in seattle was a great life changing experience even though i already was a christian it showed how we should really be.  this weekend also caused me and alot of other people, i would imagine, to really change there way of thinking.  i as a student yet and not a leader found that this was such a great experience that if at all possible i would love to go next year.  i am so glad that you can help so many people come to God through all that you do.  if it wern’t for you i would believe that there would be far less people out there not only still afraid to share but also not christian that because you inspire so many people they can help all there friends and some come to know christ as there pesonal savior.  over all it was great and really opened me up thanx.  nathan

    • This conference was my first time at D2S and it was absolutely amazing. The drama made me cry so hard that even by the last song I was still bawling. For me it was so convicting because the girl who hadn’t accepted Christ (Jordan?), reminded me of my friend Heather the ENTIRE time. Like the girl, she had said the prayer, and I was so proud of her. But recently, I found out she had lied the words, she had only wanted to recieve a rose, as is custom at my church. During the drama I was so consumed with guilt, not just for her but all of my non-Christian friends, guilty that EVERY DAY I could be witnessing to them, that I wasn’t taking advantage of the chances God gives me EVERY DAY. Guilt because I knew if they died tomorrow, they would spend eternity in Hell. The next night, when we were told to call a friend, I called her. I talked to her for at least ten minutes, and I was amazed at how open she was, I could tell she was taking every word I was saying seriously. She agreed to talk to me more on monday and I left her with a question. I asked her to seriously think about how she would feel if she was to spend all of her eternity in the firey pit of despair. I left the church, crying once again, and I told my best friend about my phone call. After that, I told my youth pastor and he was so supportive. I was, and still am, incredibly joyful, and I cannot wait to talk to her tomorrow.

Saturday was my 13th birthday ( I also spent my 12th birthday at dare2share) and because of everyone there it was my best birthday ever! And i wanted to especially thank you! The way you connect to us teenagers in a way we can understand is amazing! Now me and my entire youth group is gonna do our best to be ready for judgment day… because today is GAMEDAY, Tori in Salem, Oregon
