My buddy “Art” is back from Iraq

Posted on Wednesday 6 February 2008 by Greg @ 6:42 am
Filed under: Rants

Got to hang out with the infamous “Art” last night. He’s the same guy I use in some of my sermons who snuck up on a guy in a movie theater bathroom, while the dude was, er, preocupied at “the wall.” Art grabbed the dude’s shoulders from behind, shook him like a rag doll and scared the living snot (and more) out of this poor AMC movie watcher. Art thought the dude was me. He had the same hair, same shirt style, etc. Meanwhile I was in the stall just a few feet away, rather preoccupied myself, watching the whole crazy episode unfold.

I don’t know if I have ever laughed that hard since.

That was like twenty years ago but will forever be etched in my mind as the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. I could have stopped him before he got to the guy but decided to let nature take its course…so that I could have a killer sermon illustration.

Last night Art and I went out to dinner and then went on to see the movie Cloverfield. I tried to avoid going to the bathroom for obvious reasons.

While the movie is a rock-em-sock-em monster movie it was nothing compared to listening to Art share his crazy experiences in Iraq over dinner. Near death, close calls, whizzing bullets by the temple (the brain bucket not the worship center), IED’s blowing his truck up, etc, etc, etc.

Art also shared with me many of the powerful witnessing opportunities God gave to him while he was there. Guess what his primary tool was? The GOSPEL Journey Reality Series!

I’ll be doing a short interview with Art on the Dare 2 Share Uncensored Podcast. It should be up on the d2s website this Friday afternoon. Be sure to check it out.

Pray for Art as he goes back next week for more action, both militarily and spiritually. I guess he’s still sneaking up behind the enemy on every level.

Signed, Greg Stier

    • Greg,

Great to hear Art got to come home for some much needed time off and spend it with family and friends. I pray for him regularly as it’s a dangerous place. My wife just attended a funeral yesterday for one of the men killed last week in Iraq. It certainly brings the situation home on a new level when you know some of the men in the thick of the fight.

Can’t wait to see Art in action online!

    • One of my friend’s dad is in Afghanistan. The stories you here from over there are indeed pretty crazy. glad he got some time off though.

this is a bit off topic, but the past couple of weeks i’ve ran into a bunch of differen deep theological discussions, and while i know the scripture fairly well and i kno all of the basic truths, i have a hard time defending myself as the discussion gets deeper. are there any books, in addition to the Bible, that you would recommend looking into?

      thanks

    • Your friend Art seems like a pretty cool guy. I’m glad you guys got to spend some “guy” time with each other. That’s awesome how he use the G.O.S.P.E.L journal! I will pray for Art in his work of duty and for his spiritual rome of work too.

      Have an awesome week Greg!

    • Greg,
My brother Adam is in Iraq, except he’s not taking it so well. All those “crazy” experiences are tearing him apart. Pray for Him please, he has been through soo much, and He needs to see that God is with him. He’s been there since last febuary and he finally gets to leave in may (thank the LORD!!)
I’m soo glad your friend has had time to witness to others!
      God Bless!

      Love in Christ, Katie

    • Hey Sam, try checking out “Basic Theology” by Charles Ryrie. And don’t waste too much time “quarreling about words” like the apostle Paul warns. Some guys spend way too much time blogging and not enough reaching others with the good news of Jesus…avoid those dudes.

    • Greg, please relay:

Art, thank you. Thank you for serving the Kingdom, and our country. (and for giving Greg such an awesome sermon illustration!)
And to those of you who have shared of family and friends who are serving now, thank you to them as well. I agree with you Eddie, just hearing about is a far cry from knowing. Kind of like Jesus wouldn’t you say. We can hear about Jesus, but it’s when we know Him that our lives really change. And like Sam stated above, when we know His truth, it takes us to “the thick of the fight”. Props Sam for wanting to be prepared, hide God’s word in your heart, the power will come from His word.

    • yea, i got trapped in one of those arguments. it was a big mistake on my part - i got a little cocky - but the people involved knew a lot more than little ol’ 17 year old me. I was orginally trying to correct some false beliefs, but i soon found that that wasnt within my ability. Instead, I found myself slipping into their mistakes. I’m going to make it a point to avoid stuff like that again, but i still wanted to be prepared just in case, thanks
