    GPS 23

Posted on Sunday 21 September 2008 by Greg @ 10:27 pm
    Filed under: Rants

The GPS is my guide, I shall not get lost.
She makes me drive over black asphalt.
She leads me beside quiet side streets.

She restores my sense of peace in a strange town.
She guides me in paths of right directions.
    for her brand name’s sake.

    Even though I speed
under the shadow of the overpass
I will fear no dead ends
    for you are with me;
    your satellite and calming voice,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a map before me
in the presence of drivers with road rage.
My venti cup of joe overflows when I hit a pothole
And annoints my pants with coffee stains.

Surely State Troopers will not follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will continue to find my destinations forever.

Okay, this is pretty goofy I admit. But here I am in Phoenix sitting at a Starbucks and thinking about the best gift my family ever gave me…a GPS. I used to get lost all the time. It’s hard to drive and look at a map at the same time. But now my GPS (I call her a “she” because she has a female voice) just tells me where to turn and I turn. When she says “You have arrived” I always have a sense of accomplishment. The GPS has so many correlations to the Christian life it’s ridiculous. I’ll let you figure them all out. Any ideas?

    Signed, Greg Stier

      • Greg — you have no idea how awesome it was to come into work today and see this post. Yesterday I was in a brainstorming session for our statewide high school retreat and one of the leaders came up with the idea to use “GPS” for our theme. The “God Positioning System” or the “God Provided Simulation” were some of the acronym solutions we came up with. We might use Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.”
Anyway — imagine the look on my face when I came in today to your blog. It was a God moment. Priceless!
I will be checking back for more ideas…

      • lol it took me two reads to understand why the title of this post was “GPS 23.” YAY! COLLEGE LIFE!

To add something useful, when I drive throughout my new city, I feel comfortable knowing that I will arrive at where I want to be because of my GPS. If for some reason I make a mistake, it will guide me back on the road to my destination. God provides that same sort of comfort (except much better) as I navigate the tangled highway that is college. Although the weather may be rough, the roads torn up, and the signs confusing, God will lead me home to Him.

      • That’s so funny. I love it, love it, love it. My sense of direction is ‘nil so the GPS is a life (and gas) saver.
How about this one. God is like a GPS, even if you make a wrong turn he will get you back on the right road.

      • lol this cracked me up! I’m still a little skeptical of the GPS, so far everyone who has used a GPS to find our house has gotten lost. I did use my Verizon navigator on vacation this summer and enjoyed it, but I still used the good ‘ole map. I’m old school, I like to study the map and have a picture in mind of where we’re going and have a heads up of more than a few feet before a turn.

      • I used to travel for work. My co-worker and I named the Hertz Never Lost voice “Betty.” Not sure why, it just seemed to fit.

Anyway, this post made me laugh out loud! Also, it made me think.

Thanks for the challenge at Northern Hills on Sunday. My husband and I needed it!
