God and candy

"Hey Jeremy."

"Yeah dad?"

"You remember what Easter is all about right?"

"Sure dad…God and candy."

I’m sure the risen Lord was smiling too as my little boy shared his thoughts with me. Right there and then we had a chat about the more specific reason for this season (aka "the resurrection of our Lord"). When I was finished with my sermonette he just smiled and said, "I know dad" then asked me for a cookie.

A kid’s theology may not technically be correct on every count (whose is?) but they sure do have a fresh, innocent and unique view of the holidays we celebrate and the God we serve. I love that Jeremy sees Jesus as ever present…because he is. I love that Jeremy sees Jesus as the strongest person in the universe…because he is. I love that Jeremy sees Jesus as the ultimate superhero…because he is.

And now my little two year old Kailey is starting to talk more and more. I can’t wait for the hard candy shell and chocolate gooey center "theological" conversations we are going to be having in the months and years to come.

This little girl is different than Jeremy. She is sugar and spice…a lot of spice. And she has got me wrapped around her tiny little fingers. I told Jeremy that when she does something bad he gets the spanking. She’s too cute to spank (I’m kidding of course. No kid is that cute. And for those of you who have a problem with spanking why don’t you just take a "time out" and think about it.)

I wonder when my little Kailey will start talking about God. She loves to pray outloud. Whenever I start to pray she says, "I pray. I pray." And she kind of echoes my prayers in her own toddler dialect along with me. Cute. Cute. Cute.

As we come to this easter season I thank God for my wife and two wonderful kids. The resurrected Jesus gave me something special when he blessed me with this wonderful family.

But the best give he gave was his own life. His death, burial and resurrection paved the way for our forgiveness and restoration to what God originally intended for all of humanity…an unhindered, unrelenting, unending relationship with him.

So thank you God for the ultimate gift. Thank you for your Son…

(and candy!)

Signed, Greg Stier

    • Hey! just wanted to say real quick that my youth group just finished the G.O.S.P.E.L. Journey a couple weeks ago, and it’s really helped me. I take ballet, and one of my friends there (not in my youth group)is also a Christian.  We’ve been recently convicted to witness to a couple people in our class. And as we were trying to figure out appriate measures to take, according to their background, their present, and their personalities, I have been able to refer back to those dvd’s numerous times. Andit was helped me get a better understanding of some of the different ideas and beliefs people have about Christianity, and what turned them off. This has in all, enabled me to be a more prepared, more learned Christian for the ministy field. (no, I’m not becoming a missionary, but I figured that would be an appropiate term for any kind of evangilizing) the aspect of not shoving Christianity down anyone’s throat, but just giving them an ‘inside look’ of Christianity, has been inspiring. Thanks so much. I’m sure you have heard this sort of letter many times, but I thought it would be encouraging to hear one more.  Thank you SO much. God has used you in so many ways. Thanks.

    • We are praying for our 9 year olds salvation. He has a lot of questions and we can see the sensitivity growing. I love the interesting tho somtimes difficult questions that arise in everyday life. we do eggs and candy on Easter, but we also put eggs in the hunt that have things in them to represent easter - i.e. an egg with a nail and one with coins and one with a rock and one empty. You get the picture. This is a great way to share the gospel and when there are guests at the house for easter - whether family or not, they hear the Gospel as well. Thank you for being bold and persistant with the call to win the lost. Our family has been impacted by your ministry and we have seen its impact in the lives of countless others. Thank you - God bless and Happy Easter!      Julie

    • When my little sister (now 7) got old enough to start praying, she’d pray at every meal and always thank God for our food, and the day, and then proceed to thank Him for Pastor Phil, and a long list of other people and events. She wasn’t copying any of us- it was all original, and so precious. Praise the Lord for children!

    • Happy Easter! It’s true little kids always shock us by showing how simple certian aspects of God are. Like if you go up to a little kid (one that gose to a church) and ask them who God is they seem to always come up with the most simplistic and true staements. It’s always fun to listen to what a little kid will say when you ask them a simple question that most adults would take an hour to explain (yes that is a bit of an exaggeration, most of the time). As always if anyone wants to reply to my thouts go ahead and e mail me at living4thecross91@yahoo.com . Remember what "The true meaning of Easter" is and don’t just glaze it over take the whole hour to explain what it is. Then listen to a five year old explain it in ten seconds. Think about God in all you do. Freindly and brotherly/sisterlty love in Christ, Crystal
