    Dedication and Leadership

Posted on Sunday 20 June 2010 by Greg @ 7:50 am

There is a little book called Dedication and Leadership that every Christian leader should read. Here’s what the back cover says about it’s author, Douglas Hyde:

“On March 14, 1948, Douglas Hyde handed in his resignation as the news editor of the London Daily Worker and wrote ‘the end’ to twenty years of his life as a member of the Communist Party. A week later, in a written statement, Hyde announced that he had renounced Communism and, with his wife and children, was joining the Catholic Church….In Dedication and Leadership, he advances the theory that although the goals and aims of Communism are antithetical to human dignity and the rights of the individual, there is much to be learned from communist methods, cadres and psychological motivation. Hyde describes the Communist mechanics of instilling dedication, the first prerequisite for leadership. Here is the complete rationale of party technique: how to stimulate the willingness to sacrifice; the advisibility of making big demands to insure a big response….In this small book, so large with implications, Douglas Hyde comments on both Communist and Catholic potential and their lack of maximum effectiveness. He advocates positive Catholic action, not just a negative anti-Communism, and he points out that the guidelines are now down for a decisive choice between total Communism and a total Christianity. Here is a realistic approach to an acute problem uncolored by emotional propaganda, and here is a realistic answer on how to inspire dedication for leadership.”

While I’m not Catholic (and I’m certainly not Communist!) I found this book to be hugely beneficial when it comes to my ministry philosophy at Dare 2 Share. Here are just a few quotes from this short, yet powerful, little book:

“Youth is a period of idealism. The Communists attract young people by appealing directly to that idealism. We ahve no cause to complain if, having neglected the idealism of youth, we see others come along, take it, use it and harness it to their cause-and against our own.”

If this quote doesn’t make a case for youth ministry being driven by THE Cause of Christ (the ultimate dedicated leader) I don’t know what does!

“The Communists’ appeal to idealism is direct and audacious. They say if you make little demands on people you will get a little response. But if you make big demands on them, you will get a heroic response.”

Can I get an amen, or, better yet, a heroic response?

“What distinguishes the Communist movement from most others…and makes it possible for so small a minority to make so great an impact upon our time is the dedication of the average individual member and the immense and dynamic force this represents when all those individuals collectively make their contribution to the cause.”

I am giving you three action points from my post today:

    1. Buy Dedication and Leadership right now.

    2. Read it and then read the book of Acts (be warned: the book of Acts is even better!)

    3. Join THE Cause and get trained to live it here.

Are you dedicated enough to read the books and watch the podcasts or are you just going to read this blog and move on? Your answer may indicate your dedication level.

    Yes, I’m calling you out.

    Signed, Greg Stier

      • For a whole week, our team of 17 went to Rescue Atlanta and served the homeless (not just physical food—but spiritual food as well). The students were bold as we walked the streets of Atlanta and saw the Power of God as people got saved, healed, fed, and ministered to. We also got to experience persecution as we shared the Gospel. The last part of our trip was “team building” and “rest” at Suzanne Phillip’s sister’s house in Charlotte, NC on the lake for 2 days.

Unity was the key to our success as we served in Atlanta (1 Corinthians 12). It was amazing to see the students and adults get to know each other a lot better over the week. Deeper friendships were formed and enjoyed by all!
The students & adults also spent time with God in morning worship with their devotionals and got to experience true spiritual growth…

Greg Stier, President of Dare2Share Ministries says, “when teenagers are willing to sacrifice their friendships if need be so that their friends can hear the message of Jesus it results in exponential spiritual growth. They pray more (because they are afraid). They depend on God’s Spirit more (because they need His power)! And they study the Bible more (because they want to know how to answer any questions that their friends may have)!”

My teens are new in the faith and they are just learning what it means to be a Christian. They have a hard time getting in the Word and doing their quiet times daily. But when we pushed them out the door to walk the streets of ATL we saw something amazing! They were forced to pray & depend of God’s Spirit for words and direction; they asked me questions about evangelism in the moment—which forced them to search the Scriptures themselves.

The Church today puts a lot of emphasis on teaching as the way to accelerate spiritual growth. I disagree. But we see little growth. Why? Because we don’t “experience” the truth of the teaching. We hear a whole lot of teaching about sharing the Gospel, salvations, people getting healed, people experiencing the presence of God, transformed lives. But when was the last time you saw someone get healed? When was the last time you saw someone lost get saved? When was the last time you saw someone get filled with the Spirit and live in the Power of God? When was the last time you experienced God’s presence or got persecuted for sharing the Gospel? We did—last week in Atlanta! We grew so much in this last week!

When I read the Scriptures—I see Jesus give the charge to go out and experience the Word of God. Over the 3 year span of Jesus’ ministry, we see Jesus sharing His Cause—the mission to “seek and save the Lost” and bring the Kingdom of God to earth. To His disciples, He challenged them to live it out NOW! He sent them out on journeys to share the Gospel and heal the sick (Matt 10). Then come back and have a debriefing session—encouraging each other with testimonies. Revelation 12:11 says this builds our faith and we overcome the enemy by sharing testimony. Sitting and listening to “teaching after teaching” is overrated. The students learned more about the Power of God, healing, salvations, sharing the Gospel (THE Cause) in 1 week—being pushed out of their comfort zone—than the last year hearing teachings on THE Cause!

Yes, I did train them all year on how to share their faith—but it wasn’t until they were pushed as a group did they break out of their shells and desire to share more. They all shared the Gospel and asked their friends to come to youth group this whole year—but it was neat to see HUGE breakthrough this week on the streets. The challenge is to see them live this way (with the same intensity and fire) in school in the Fall. But now they have the experience and confidence as a group to live THIS Cause out in their schools!

They all broke out of their shell! One got saved! And all want to share the Gospel and lay hands on the sick, broken, and discouraged every Wednesday night as a group (instead of our “normal Wed nights) on the streets & beaches of New Smyrna Beach! Pray for opportunities & boldness as we live THE Cause in this next season (1 Thess 3:1-3; Col 4:3).

      • I completely agree with you. This book rocked the way I think about both evangelism and discipleship. HT to Dave Rahn for assigning me this book.

      • Might I suggest reading Acts AS you read this book? I have been doing so and it is quite eye opening.

I think too many churches think Acts ends at chapter 28. Try asking your congregation one day to turn to the 29th chapter of Acts, and see what happens. It’s fun.
