Comments on: Church going atheists who write books for Christians

I can understand that people get the heebee jeebee’s. because when i’ve brought people to my church, they got freaked out by our pastor talking about how there’s not much time before jesus comes back, and we need to have our hearts set right before he comes, or it could end up badly for us. They just don’t know they are being convicted. but then there are the christians who do things that is pretty much hypocritical, and non-christians look on, and say "that’s not what you told me I’m supposed to do.’ then there are some that just see what is happening, and just get offended. Now i just need to find a way to tell those people at the church that they are offending non-christians. My youth pastor was talking about how you need to try not to offend them by what you do. not meaning that if you practice christianity, you are offending them, so stop. But, by your actions, that dont seem very Christ-like is what is offending them, because they think "Well, they tell us not to Judge people, but how can they sit there say those sort of things to that person?" Cody, The universe did not "blow up." Pardon me, but go read a real science book. Christianity, in reality, does seem fake. For example, people at church singing. They just stand their and sing. A few might raise their hands, but that’s about it, and I’m standing there, thinking, is that the best you can do for a god that you supposedly believe is all-powerful, all-knowing, and can do literally anything he wants to!? Get on your knees and worship him, for god’s sake! Or bow down face to the ground … I mean, is just kind of standing and singing the best you can do? Come on! Even the Muslims are more real than that, and you’re trying to label them as fakes. And, for example, people witnessing. If you truly believe that god controls everything, including everyone’s thoughts and what goes on in their mind, is it that hard to witness, knowing that god is in control of the thoughts and actions of the other person? Why be afraid? You have an infinitely powerful god on your side, who can do anything he wants with this person. It shouldn’t take a genius to realize all this, but hey, what do I know. Greg,ster + dare2share = Great Job! Get-em while their young. Save many, much pain. Homie (Jedi Dan) is right, we should not need the Holy Spirit. Being created in the image of God. But the reality is we do, or He would not have sent the Comforter to us. Read the book (the bible) we are weak – He (Jesus) is strong. I can see, from an atheistic standpoint, Christianity seems…so…fake? Kuz it must take an enormous amount of faith to believe that there was nothing – it blew up and now we have this incredibly complex universe? Woe, now that is a leap of faith! It is not the end of the world for atheist to critique the church, after all they have been doing it for a couple of thousand years. As you (Greg) mentioned though, when we try to make the atheist all comfortable in their sin – that’s where the trouble begins. This also has been going on since the church began. Many pagan customs were adopted early on by some of the churches trying to please the people, to build up their membership numbers… Amazing how the more things change, the more they remain the same! "there is nothing new under the sun" This is why your work and the what should be the work of every christian is so very important. We must study to know God’s word, so that we can be bold, an approved workman of the LORD, ready to give an answer for the faith we have. Above all, as you stated we must tell everyone not to hold up the christian but Christ as the real example, the mark to strive for. Don’t put your trust man(kind), don’t try to be like other people, don’t put your faith man(kind). Set your sights on Jesus, the only one who has ever hit the mark dead on the bull’s eye! I think that for the most part, people who love the darkness of their sin more than the Light of Christ, use any and every excuse they can grasp at to make their darkness seem not so dark (bad). And while having said all that, I am not excusing christians (we are to be perfect as He is perfect). This sometimes is a paradox many of us, as we know we can not be perfect… Beloved it is the fight that you fight! To be right! But even that is of little effect if you do not have and accept Christ and the price He paid for you, kuz you and I could not, can not and will not be perfect till we go to be with Him. Hey Master Jedi Dan, I have to say that I agree with your last statement that many Christians tend to be a "bunch of people with a half-hearted belief in God." I love the line in Braveheart where Earl the Bruce tells his father of William Wallace, "He believes. I want to believe like he believes." I think if we truly believed in God then evangelism would flow naturally out. But please don’t judge Christianity by Christians judge it by Christ. Check out the book of John when you can and read the account of Jesus by his best friend John. At best I fall grossly short. But that’s what makes the Christian message, well, the best. It is a message of hope for all who fall short (which is all!) As you keep an open mind I’m sure you will consider these things in your search. Thanks again for posting on my blog.

Hiya Greg, I agree, we need to look to the Word of God on how to do church! We are just so human. We don’t always get it right…actually, I think we seldom get it right! I bet we are going to be V-E-R-Y suprised when we are with God for eternity, looking back at our small attempts to honor Him in our regular meeting together as local bodies of Christ. To coment on the observations of Jedi Dan: Like the father of the boy with the evil spirit in Mark chapter 4 said to Jesus: "Lord I believe! Help me to overcome my unbelief!" Guess we aren’t all there yet!

Coming from an atheistic standpoint, Christianity seems…so…fake. Do people really believe in a god, or do they just kind of go along with all of it? Why don’t people who say they believe in an all-powerful, all-knowing god act upon it? Why don’t they witness without fear, knowing that god controls the thoughts and intentions of every person’s heart, bow down before him when they worship him, since an all-powerful god is so awe-inspiring (or should be), why do they worry and have stress in life if their god is all-powerful and their future is secure and infinitely better than here and now, and why do they mourn when a fellow believer dies? None of it makes sense. You shouldn’t even need the "Holy Spirit" living inside of you in order to witness without fear, because if you truly believe that a god exists, then you should be able to tell others about him without any fear because he is in control of everything, including the mind of the person you’re talking to. To sum it up, all we atheists see is a bunch of people with a half-hearted belief in god.

HOO-RAH, Greg! Man! I can’t remember the last time (ever?) anyone fell down in my church convicted by our Holy Spirit as only He can convict, myself included. Thanks again for reminding me who I am, who we are….only in Him.
