Christian Bumper Stickers

Posted on Saturday 27 January 2007 by Greg @ 9:36 am
Filed under: Rants

NOTE:  This is a revised reprint of an old Stier Straight I wrote awhile ago. After my much responded to blog on Bad Christian movies I thought that I would shift the "rage" (okay it’s not rage but more a more-than-mild annoyance) toward the Christian bumper sticker industry. Enjoy this post in the spirit in which it was written…mildly annoyed quasi rage and just a touch of compassionate conservativism combined with a liberal dose of sarcasm…or whatever.

What is it with the body of Christ and bumper stickers? I mean how many people do you think will be in heaven because they read some words on the back of a car and were “driven” to become Christians. And who is it that sits around and thinks up these sayings? They are like holy Hallmark cards, the perfect mixture of corny and Christian. Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure the intent of taking the time to buy a Christian bumper sticker and actually place it on the glimmering bumper of your traveling Pontiac pulpit is noble but come on. The deeply spiritual declarations that some Christians plaster on their cars for all the world to see and read may not be as pithy or effective as they think. Deep thoughts like…

            “God is my copilot.”

“Warning! In case of rapture driver will disappear!"

            "Angels are watching over me."

or my personal favorite love-to-hate bumper sticker…

              “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven!”

If God is your copilot why not try letting go of the steering wheel and taking a little nap? Shouldn’t he be driving anyway? I mean he’s had his license a lot longer than you and I’m sure his driving record is impeccable.

And should more than one angel have to watch over you? Are you that bad of a driver that you need a whole team of angels? If your driving is so bad that you need more than one angel to watch over you it may be time to buy some bus tokens or hitch a ride to work.

But the one trite sound byte I dislike the most is this: “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven!” It’s like a license to drive badly. So what if you ram the car next to you? You’re not perfect right? I can hear the conversation now:

“Son, do you know how fast you were going?”

“No. Officer.”

“You were going forty miles an hour over the speed limit.”

“Didn’t you read my bumper sticker when you pulled me over? We Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven.”

“Well, God may forgive you son, but the judge is gonna make you pay.”

If you are a bad driver you should probably break out the razor blade and scrape off all of your Bible Bumper Stickers and Christian fish symbols and Christian fish symbols eating Darwin fish symbols (by the way isn’t there a better way to engage that dialogue…like maybe actual dialogue for instance?). If you speed a lot or wreck a lot or talk on the cell phone while eating a cheeseburger a lot it’s probably time to remove all Christian quotes from your car’s bumper. I have been in nine wrecks since I got my driver’s license so there are nada bumper stickers on my car.

But if you are really determined to have a bumper sticker and you are a really bad driver you could replace those Christian bumper stickers with ones that will help the Christian cause by default. Bumper stickers like:

“How’s my driving? Call 1-800-Mormon Church”

            “Atheists rule.”

"Don’t flip me off. I’m Hindu. I got reincarnated as a bad driver!"

            “Honk if you love Allah.”

If you are a bad Christian driver and sporting one of these bumper babies then maybe drivers behind you will think, "Well, if that’s how ________s drive then I’m becoming a Christian!

Just kidding. Please don’t do that. If you thought I was serious then I want to introduce you to my friend named Sar. He’s a funny dude. By the way his last name is "casm". I’m sure you two have never met.  And if you are a Mormon, Hindu, Atheist or Muslim reading this right now please don’t be offended. As a matter of fact I have a thought…Smile, God loves you! How do I know? I read it on a bumper sticker!

When you think about it Christians shouldn’t need bumper stickers of any kind to declare our Christianity to others. We shouldn’t have to have buttons or bumper stickers for those around us to get the message. Our lives should be so bathed in the love of Jesus Christ and power of the Holy Spirit that those we encounter should sense something supernatural.

Paul put it this way to the Corinthians, “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.”

What is Paul saying? Let me give you a modern paraphrase, “You yourselves are our bumper sticker, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You are a bumper sticker from God, the result of our ministry, printed not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not stuck on an actual car bumper, but on the bumper of the human heart!”

Every word you speak, everything you do is a bumper sticker. Your actions, intonations, attitudes, responses, non verbal and verbal communication all shout something to people around us. Those who read our micro messages are either drawn closer to Christ or driven farther from him.

Be careful how you drive.

I’d like to blog more about this but I better stop. I’m driving and don’t want to get in another wreck. Honk if you love Jesus!

Signed, Greg Stier

    • This blog made me laugh. One of my frineds has a pro life bumpersticker on her car. She has gotten into many conversations with many people at our school about it, and becsue of it, been able to have an oppertunity to tell those people about Chirst. So not all chirstian bumperstickers are bad. Chistian bumperstickers on bad Chirstian drivers, though, certainly don’t have the same affect. I actually know one family who had Jesus fish on thier car, and intentionally removed them becasue they wanted to drive badly. It may not be very chirstlike to do that, but it makes me laugh, and think. If we had a car plastered with things like "Chirst saves" don’t you think we would choose to be better drivers? To show Christ in our driving to others as we drive? The answer is yes, but thats not what happens. They may be corny sayings, but i think they are sort of effective in some cases or can be anyway.

    • greg … this reminded me of that old joke about the woman with the Christian bumper sticker on her car that got caught up in some road rage and flipped off another driver … a cop saw her … pulled her out of the car and arrested her. Put her in jail … and in a few hours came back and apologized to her for arresting her with this comment … "I saw your bumper sticker about … they will know we are Christians by our love … then I saw you flipping off that guy that cut you off … I thought the car must have been stolen." love your blog wg

    • Yes Leah, if we choose to have Christian bumper stickers then we should choose to drive well (actually we should try to drive well anyway…what’s that verse…I Corinthians 10:31, "Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."…even driving!) Thanks for your comment Leah (and Wayne and Becky too!)

    • Hey Greg! This made me laugh and i needed a laugh! I totally agree with you. It bugs me soo bad when i see someone with a Christian bumper sticker especialy the people i know and what really pushes it over the edge is when i know who they are and how they act, they dont need to have a Christian bumper sticker on their car if they dont  understand what it means, they dont need to have it just to have a bumper sticker. Some people are hypercritics not all people though. Another thing is when people have a Christian bumper sticker on their car along with bad ones. Whats the point of putting it up then? I mean come on people!  I just dont understand people these days! Bumper stickers are tacky anyways haha but who ever has them Rock on!! im not dissin on ya! my mom has some on her car. She trys to put them on my car but Im like no thanks haha. I also agree with you on we shouldnt have bumper stickers to show or love for the Lord. if you really do then people will know you do when they see you or talk to you. not by the bumper stickers on your car. Love ya! God Bless, Bri

    • I loved your post… and it made me think back to earlier today… when i went grocery shopping with my mother… i know it’s probably off topic, but somehow, my mind got from your post to the event that happened today.  My mother and I left Winco Foods in Vancouver WA. we were going to turn onto the main road, when we saw two women sitting on the curb holding a sign. the part that was most visible, was the word, in large text, "HOMELESS". A girl just about my age [18] and her, as to what I assumed, her mother, sitting there, hoping for a little bit of help. We turned onto the main road, and I looked at my mother, and she looked at me. "I feel bad. I don’t have money to give them." I told her. She pulled back into the parking lot at the next inlet, and she parked, pulled out a five, and a one dollar bill. Six dollars. We pulled up next to them again, and I held my arm out the window, saying "Here you go." The girl my age slowly stood up, and walked over my the truck.  As she approached, I took in her appearance, a band tee, black pants, looked punk. Not far from the style i’m into, i noticed. She is very pretty, i think. I look into her eyes as she stands next my door, and she takes the six dollars. My eyes don’t stray anywhere but her face, as i notice the glassy liquid covering her eyes. She’s been crying, i noticed.  "Thank you." she says in a quiet, higher pitched voice. She goes back next to her mother, and sits back on the curb as the older woman also says ‘thank you’. My mind reels with thoughts about how these two had come to be homeless. I don’t usually give money to people. When I absolutely feel like they need it do I give money, which has only been once before. A woman with two small children, was out of gas, and was far away from her home in Colorado. [my home-state!] I kept thinking of the tone of her voice. How the tears were begging to drop from her eyes, and the fact that i was too foolish, and too scared to say  ‘God Bless You’ Like it is some sort of tragedy to say a simple sentence. I panicked. I just couldnt think of anything but that young girl. I feel as though I have a horrible life when there are people that have no home, and have to beg for money? I feel like a spoiled brat! Thinking as we drove home, as i was crocheting my blanket. I thought about a plan I had told my mother about, two years ago. I want to rent a house. Make some rules, and gather some homeless people, and let them stay, help them find jobs, and keep them safe and fed. I have no means to do that, but now that i live in a place that has a higher homeless rate than Chehalis Washington, In a few hours time, I will approach my new pastor at the Battleground Assembly of God, and I will tell him of what happened to me, and see if he has any thoughts about putting this into action. I believe that people such as the girl i saw today will benefit from something like this. I know there are place out there for homeless, but how many of them are going to put an effort into being in these peoples lives, teach them about Jesus, and help them to better themselves, get jobs, and move out onto their own?  Tell me if I am totally Crazy or not Greg… but this idea came from a naive 16 year old [now 18] that had never had to witness anything such as homelessness or anything close to it. I have always had a supportive family, and a roof over my head, no matter how big or small that roof may have been. I just want someone to tell me that i have a great idea to help the people that have less than I have.  Thanks for listening to my rant… AMBER

    • Amber that is not a crazy idea!  i think it is a wonderful idea! That would help many people who need help and it would give them a chance to learn about the Lord. I will pray for you that you get the strength and the support you need to do this project. It may be hard at first  but its something the Lord wants you to carry through and it’ll be worth it in the end. So stay strong and keep the faith! Keep us updated on how it goes! God Bless Bri

    • Dear Greg, My name is Katie Coriell.  I went to the D2S this weekend. And it was just an unbeleivable expierence.  Well, you told us to share our story on here because you like to read them and yeah. Well i decided to tell you mine.  You see, I wasnt born into a Christian home. Not exactly but kinda its really confusing. Anyway when my mom had me her and my dad were still married.  They were divourced about three months after I was born.  My mom was and still is a hardcore Jesus lover and a major Christian.  But my dad was a Jehovah Witness.  You see my dad was raised in a Jehovah Witness’s Church.  And he still is a Jehovah Witness. I wish i could get him to become a Christian but,  its not that easy.  You see before a was born his dad died of a heart attack.  His dad was a Jehovah Witness as well.  So i dont really know if hes ready to be a Christian because his whole side of the family is of that religon.  Anyways,  growing up i wasnt really sure which religon to take in.  Because since my parents were divourced one weekend i would be at my moms going to a Christian Church then the next i would be at my dads Jehovah Witness Hall.  So i was getting the same amount of Gospel from both places.  As you can guess going to two completely different churchs who had really different testomony i was really confused.  I wasnt sure what to believe. Then in about the fourth grade my mom put me into a Vacation Bible School to maybe help me out a little. Well,  I think i was about 10 and i got saved.  At that time i was still confused about the religons and wasnt sure of what i was doing.  So, it really didnt count.  three years later we moved to a small town called Waverly we actually had been there since i was in the fifth grade.  Anyhoo  for two years i attended Waverly Schools and then i transferred to Pike Christian Academy and i started to understand the Bible a little better.  During that time my church, First Baptist Church was watching the Gospel Jorney.  I have to say watching that series is what got me saved last year.  Because of all those other kids from different religous beliefs and it really made it clear.  Then i decided to go to D2S and it was so awesome it really opened my eyes.  Well now i am really active in the youth and church etc.  Me and my dad drifted apart because of me becoming a Christian.  So its my goal to get my dad to make that decision.  Thats my story and please write me back if u have the time i know ur prolly really busy this time of year but please make time to email me back at coriellk@yahoo.com Sincerely Katie Coriell ps thank u so much for the gospel journey series without it my name wouldnt be in the book of life!  If i never see you again i KNOW i will see you up there!!

    • Hi Greg , Just got back from D2S in Columbus. WOW  Thanks man I needed that. Anyways about the bumper stickers, i’ve seen it work both ways . When i was a kid (i’m 42 now) my friend’s mom had  the "God is my co-pilot" sticker on her van. But i heard the stories about how his older brothers got beaten with hi-heel shoes and sweeper hoses. That " hypocrite" kept me from going to church years later when my own life was messed up. I didn’t want to be like her.     There were 4 or 5 people that had alot to do with me getting saved  7 years ago and one of them was this guy named Rodney Miller where i worked ;  he had a bumper sticker on the back of his truck  that said " Real Men Love Jesus"   I never really talked to him but whenever I parked in the same area as him seeing that sticker was like fingernails on a chalkboard, i tried but i  just couldn’t ignore it.      God is good  ,  2 years ago we were singing Christmas carols at a nursing home  and i was going by a room and saw him visiting someone . I didn’t have time to stop and talk so i just stuck my head in and thanked him  for that bumper sticker.   Thanks again for all you do . It would be great to get you over here in western Pa sometime- God Bless -Brad

You are right to an extent, which is, if you are a bad driver, or have intentions of driving badly, or running people off the road,or driving dangerously, then please, for the love of the Father, DON’T give Christ a bad name by having Him on your bumper sticker while your acting that way, But, for the rest of us who actually follow the rules of the road, and happen to be on it for hours at a time every day, or even for minutes a day, like picking up kids from SCHOOL, why can’t we have: “The bible is true,Jesus changed my life.” On the bunper of our car? Is THAT one okay, or does that still make us a hypocrite? You know, God builds up, He doesn’t break down…why discourage good intentions by making people feel bad about themsleves? Just a rant….or is it? I’m just sayin….
      Yours in Christ,
