    Can you hear me now?

Posted on Thursday 11 February 2010 by Greg @ 8:28 am
    Filed under: Rants

A few days ago my little girl Kailey (whose 5 years old) asked me a startling question from the back of the car as I was driving. She asked, “Why does God speak like this?” and then she went silent.

    “Speak like what?” I responded.

    “Speak like this…” silent again.

“What do you mean Kailey? Daddy doesn’t understand.” (I was expecting her to use some deeper voice impression of God instead of, well, nothing.)

Frustrated she said, “Daddy God doesn’t talk to me. He is quiet. Why doesn’t he talk to me with words?”

    Hmmm.

I wish I had a snappy theological comeback that a five year old could wrap her mind around but I didn’t. As a matter of fact I’ve been thinking about her question ever since. Yes, I know that God speaks to us through creation (Psalm 19) and through His Word (Psalm 119.) But, Kailey has a point, why doesn’t he use words?

Maybe He operates differently with you but I’ve been saved since June 23rd, 1974 and I’ve never heard the audible voice of God once. When I flip through the stations on my television set and see big haired preachers go on about the conversation they had with God over lattes last night I get a little frustrated. What am I missing? Why does God speak to me like this?____________(silence)

As I have marinated on this question over the last few days I think that one of the reasons why God doesn’t often use words is that it would remove the faith factor. Because I don’t have a “Greg, now do this….” voice in my head or in my ear I have to rely, search, pray, seek, watch and wait until He confirms in my inner spirit that this or that is the direction I should go.

Maybe it’s this internal confirmation (which some call the “still, small voice”) that is the way that God “speaks” to us without words. He uses circumstances, situations and confirmations in the deepest place of our soul to direct us.

Somebody once said, “90% of knowing God’s will is knowing God’s Word” and I agree. If you want to hear the voice of God then go and read your Bible. Every word is straight from the throneroom of God.

Last night as I tucked Kailey into bed I told her, “Kailey, God does speak today. He is speaking all the time and He speaks most of all through the Bible. Although we may not be able to hear His voice out loud, He is speaking.”

In the words of Francis Schaeffer, “He is there and He is not silent.”

The real question is not is God is speaking but are we listening?

      • Greg,
I would like to encourage you to be thankful you have not heard the audible voice of God. I’ve experience that a couple times in the past few years and it is frightening. At least for me, it seems that He gets frustrated with my stupidity and lack of trusting in Him to the point that He has to make some sort of physical contact with me, to get me on the right track, or to help me to realize that “Yes, my child, I am still here, I feel your pain, I hear your cry, trust my plan.”
I know that we are not supposed to do the whole “I wish I had faith like that person”, but I have to say that as a youth minister, I look up to you. You seem to me to be God’s man. I understand that you fail, just like the rest of us, but I see power in the work you do for the Lord. Thank you for all you do.

      • over the last mouth i have had the same question why can i hear god speak and if he is speaking to me why can i hear it? but the last two weeks god has blown me away and given me a reasurance that he is speaking to me. see over the last year god has been moving in me and in my church and a lot of things are changing, and it feels so strange almost like it is unreal. i had that same question and i could not find an answer until i let god just tell me. see some time i think we are just wanting the blessings and the voice that we miss what he is trying to show us and when he does show us we let it pass by because it was not the way we wanted to be and it don’t fit it to our little box that we try to put god in and we miss the big picture. we miss the fact that god cant be contained in a little box and that he talks to us everyday and guides us. but i think some times we are to having to much fun playing church to understand that this life we call home is nothing more than a service to god. ya sure we call our self a Christians but i must ask one question if 33 percent of the world calls them self a Christians than why is there no difference being made? i am going to be doing a report on Christianity and as i was talking to one of my fellow class mates he asked me the question “what is the difference between a non-Christian and a Christian today? then he stated that today there are so many people calling them self a Christian that you cant tell who really is Christian and who is not. so i have come to the fact that it is because we try play church and to keep god in this little box of ours that we have forgotten the true purpose of our lives and we fall in to the same trend of the sterotype Christan go to church read your bible and be a good little boy. it frustrates me because being a Christan is having a relation ship with Jesus and seeing him, but we don’t experience him because we refuse to change our ideas on how we live and refuse to lose the idea that god can be put into a box. god is more than church and rules, but we refuse to see that. i am going to give a speech on Christianity and i want to present it in a way that tells them what it really means to be a Christan, can you give me some ideas on how to present it in a way that will draw my fellow college students into a new understanding of being a Christan?

      • Thanks for the encouragement to get in the Word (like I’m about to do after making this comment). What I love most about Kailey’s question is that she expected to hear God in the first place and she thought something was wrong when she couldn’t. That is pretty cool. She give a great reminder to me to live a little more expectantly myself!

      • It seems that you have a very intelligent and deep five year old. Maybe it’s just the child in me but I have asked myself that same question about a million times. Life would be so much different if God did choose to speak audibly but then where would faith come in? I don’t know I don’t have it all figured out. Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. It is nice to have another perspective.

      • That was a wonderful question from your daughter especially at her age. The youth group I work with are teen-agers and we are covering this in class. I believe for my teen-agers I asked them have they ever prayed for something for others or themselves and they didn’t believe anything was happening, but later they discovered their situation changed? That’s what you’re calling God saying …….. but we have on-going dialogue surrounding this subject. It seems this discussion will last for a while. :-) Any other advise of a different approach would be greatly appreciated.
