Bad Christian Movies

Posted on Thursday 11 January 2007 by Greg @ 6:29 pm
Filed under: Rants

I just read another well written review of another poorly produced Christian movie. WHY? WHY? WHY? Why do we as Christians, who serve a God of excellence, continue to produce cra…I mean, less than top quality movies? How can we ever expect to use movies as an effective outreach tool if nobody will see them because they stink so bad? Is it possible for a movie to have three thumbs down? Stick around…I’m sure one of our holy brethren will be able to produce that cinematic miracle soon.

Now you may be thinking, what about Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ? Excellent movie…but the gore kept a lot of unbelievers away or caused them to leave mid plot. "What about the classic movie Chariots of Fire?" you may ask. That was the best Christian movie not directed by a Christian.

My one holy hollywood hope comes from a lifelong friend (you know who you are) who produces "secular" movies with Christian themes in the horror film genre. Sound weird? Life’s weird. Christian movies are weird. I’m weird.

I’m calling out every aspiring Christian director with this challenge: if you are going to direct a movie in the name of Christ then make sure Jesus wouldn’t ask for his money back at the ticket counter half way through the movie.

It just seems that my hope for good Christian movies has been left behind. Same with the good Christian video games.

    • its so weird cause i was just thinking about that the other day. my brother an i talk about this a lot.  and my brother has this new "mission" thing (i guess you could call it) and he goes around his collage campus and makes movies on his video camera and most of them are really stupid but their funny, and they all have to do with God and he likes to do types of movies were he goes around and interviews people and ask them questions about God then he kinda gives a message lesson at the end and the cool part is that he gets to put those movies on his school web sight, and to be honest when i first heard that i was like "jeff good idea but its not gonna work, people dont like Jesus movies" but man my brother was on fire for God and led a lot of people to christ.  but i totaly agree on the bad christian movies. Greg maybe you schould be a part time producer and make a movie! that would be rocken cool!  -eRika

    • Once again your rant speaks the truth as well as made me laugh. Earlier this evening I was checking out our Netflix account as it is time to update our movie cue. I decided to check out the Christian section and came up with…nothing. Either I’ve seen it and it wasn’t really good or I have no desire to see it because I already know it’s not worth seeing. Know what I’m saying? The question is who is willing to produce a high quality big budget Christian movie that would tear through the box office like Jack Sparrow chasing down the Black Pearl? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

So if anyone has an opinion on it let me know please.. im kinda confusing myself on this. Bethany :D

    • You’re right and I think there’s a reason christian movies are so bad. First off, lots of christian movie makers want to make a movie, instead of wanting to bring out a message. Secondly, christian movies are mostly made for christians, not for non-christians, which is a shame. Thirdly, regular movies have a huge quality that christian directors can’t live up to. And they shouldn’t. Instead of focusing on cloning regular movies, christian directors should take another path. Christian movies should offer something that regular movies haven’t. And that’s Christ. But we’re scared to share Christ boldly, so we weaken it into ‘moral’. Which is no different then regular movies, and we’re back to square one. A friend of mine directed christian children’s series in Dutch (The Netherlands, Europe). The quality was terrible, and he knew it. That’s why he made it terrible on purpose. And he made up for it by not compromising the message. The series are so radical that it squeezes the breath out of you. As a result the series are hugely popular amongst christians and, yes: lots of non-christian families! The Fourth reason is that a christian movie shouldn’t stand on its own. There should be a structure around it. Take ‘My Hope India’ for example. Millions of people came to christ through this movie series, because there was a structure behind it: People gathered in small groups to watch and discuss it. The group leaders were trained in advance by the Billy Graham association.

    • Hey Greg! I totally agree with you. It makes me think of my little brothers. They are 5 and 7. They just want to see the bad, fighting movies. The ones i dont think they should see. But hopefully one day someone will come along to make wonderful real christian movies. i have a story to tell you. My 5 year old brother and I were eatin lunch about 20 minutes ago. He was eatin Ramon noodles and i was eatin pickles. we were sittin at the dinning room table. He was talking about his koolaid..he didnt like it..anyways i was watching him and he took at big bite of his noodles and 2 of them formed a cross. that got me thinking oh i can talk to him about Jesus. This is how our conversation went. Me: Stephen do you know who God is? Stephen: yes Me: What does he do? Stephen: i dont know Me: Where does he live? Stephen: he pointed up Me: The sky? Stephen: yes Me: not the sky… Stephen: Space? Me: no not space… Stephen: Heaven? Me: yes heaven. Do you know who Jesus is? Stephen: Gods son Me: Good. What did he do? Stephen: He die Me: For who? Stephen: Me and you Me: Right. Do you know Jesus is with you no matter what you do and where you are. Stephen: Jesus is eatin lunch with me right now? He’s with me at school? Me: I said yes. Stephen: Thats so cool. I love you Jesus I was so amazed how he thought it was so cool that Jesus was with him no matter where or what he did. By then i was done so i got up and when to the sink. Then i started making some tea. I over heard Stephen talking. He was asking Jesus if he wanted something to eat, that he would make him a pbj. I was smiling from ear to ear. Then i heard Stephen ask Jesus if he had a dog. He said that they could all play together later. All i did was stand there and watch him. I was smiling  big! I was thinking just by seeing that crossed formed by 2 ramon noodles could make me so happy by watching my little brother talk and laugh with Jesus. Im thankful that i had the chance to talk to him about it and he’d actually listen. ive always brought it up when we are doing something together but he never wanted to listen but today he did!! The Lord is soo Wonderful!!!!!  God Bless Brianna

    • But… just like Christian music has come so far (i remember Christian rock in the 80’s), so too must Christian cinema.  We must support these efforts and the money to fund better produced movies will come!  In fact it is already starting to.  News Corp. (20th Century Fox) just launched FoxFaith, a Christian movie distribution company.  Imagine the $$$$ of Fox behind a Christian movie!  We might even get special effects!  They may be a little cheesy, Greg, but if we don’t support them, Hollywood won’t make them better… or at all for that matter.

You (are all!!!) making a difference!  I can’t wait to see your ripple affect when we’re in heaven!!!!  For them….  Faith

    • Yes, THANK YOU!!! I’ve tried to like some Christian movies I’ve had to watch in youth groups and churches in the past, but couldn’t stand to imagine how they could’ve been produced. Where the name of Christ and the gospel would stand, the acting skills and plots failed. Being a film student, I’m caught in a discussion about this with other filmmakers, both Christians and non-Christians, and we all agree in this area: no matter what gifts we have and what we do, Christians shouldn’t ever compromise our faith in God; and in the same matter, no matter how much faith and trust we have in God, we shouldn’t need to compromise our talents because God needs them. God gave us way more than his name and his words- he gave us gifts and bigger plans. For me, that means using creativity and skills to deliver a message in a more powerful way, even if it means being more subtle. I want to bring out the visions God gives me and the beautiful unique attraction and likeness to it, not use a church-skit formula.  It’s great that people find funding for these films and have the support of church groups, but if there’s a message meant to be brought across, why label everything "Christian" for a "Christian" market? Nothing to be ashamed of, of course, but there are strategies we can use and they can be altered if we’re stuck with a limited comforting mindset.  I will continue to remember all this and this post this year in my work and hope to not become a person that creates "Christian movies", but one that creates movies and happens to be a Christian.

    • bottom line… "christian movies" are horrible!  people get all ticked off and up in arms when someone in the movie business doesn’t fly their christian banner high, but i can’t blame them.  maybe they want to actually make a living doing what they are good at and be proud of what they do.  let’s face it, when it comes to movies, "christian" means sub-standard, cheesy and lame!  it can’t be good when people say, "well, it was pretty good… for a ‘christian movie’."  i guess this could work to our advantage.  pretty soon people’s expectations will be so low, we will hardly have to try and they will be impressed!  a bad movie is bad no matter how many scriptures and sinner’s prayers you shoehorn into it!  plus, the only people watching these things are already saved.  everybody else is just laughing.  the worst thing of all is that these movies prove to the world everything they already assume about us… we are out of touch w/ reality!  we had better get w/ the program fast!  back away from the flannel-graph board!

    • I will have to say that as a movie lover, I will have to agree that once we add the name of Jesus to a movie it had better speak volumes reguardless of who it is made by.  It also must hold to the Scriptures if those are used within it.  Yes The Passion was volient and caused mixed reviews, but we do need to realize that Christ’s Death was not a pretty sight!  Christians need to get past wanting a blue eyed brown haired Jesus who loved all the children and see that he was here on a mission- To Die and RISE AGAIN (The Missing Part of the Passion Movie) for OUR Lives!  Another movie End of the Spear showed this to being lived out by the Missionaries and their Families!  And Yes Facing the Giants was another excellent movie release.  What really needs to be remembered when it comes to those producing the movies is the worldly thought of the money thing.  When we as Christian individually stay informed and use the grass roots efforts to get the word out about movies like Facing the Giants and End of the Spear then if we go to those movies on opening weekend they have a chance to survivie. And then the financial backing will be there for more high quality movies to be produced.  But when movies are done without strong scriptural (not to mention any Revelation Related Movies) knowledge then they can’t get the financial backing and thus not the best quality.  It all comes back to the WORD not returning void- when it is really the WORD proclaimed and not our word proclaimed.

The white witch Jadis being "the devil" and Aslan being "God"  really its a really cool way to incorporate those beliefs into a neat series..yet at the same time keeping you really interested..the movie was made really good too..it was awesome!!

    • We’re in 2007 now but obviously the Christian movie industry hasn’t upgraded their equipment and intelligence since 1950… ?? CHRISTIAN MOVIES ? WITTY ? INTELLIGENT ? HIGH BUDGET ? LOW BUDGET ? CHRISTIAN MOVIES ? WITTY?INTELLIGENT ??         Fire can’t put fire out and yet us Christians think it to be a substance worth while to play with.  We are suppose to live a life so wise and cautious that the world is left empty in their accusations.  Unfortunately, we have been branded with being a people of fire rather than a people of refreshing water.  We’re to put out fires… not start them.         If anyone thinks Christian movies suck… there nothing wrong with that, that’s your opinion, you are entitled to it.  It’s when one decides to go past their sphere of friendships and involve the "Us" kind of people who didn’t ask them for their opinion.  It’s then, in my opinion… that that’s what sucks.  Rather than exceeding past friendships and imposing a complaint at the "International Christian Movies Suck Conference", do something about it.  Until then it just talk… back talk on the Christians.          I realize that in order to fix the problem, we need to know and identify what the problem is.  The miracle only takes place when we incorporate the solution to the problem, thus the problem then ceases to exist, but that would big time suck for some, (the movies would be exceptionally great) they would have nothing to talk about.  And because I’ve never seen awards given out to those who stood up and noticed the problems, I’ve come to agree with ethics and logic, that those types of people aren’t ever going to be on my pay role.          The awards that are affirmed with standing ovations and applauds are for the ones who invent, who realign the vertebrae, who do a mechanical wonder on our engines.  They are for the the the ones who scientifically provide the vaccine for the dying patient… We pay these people to fix things not to reminisce on the problem.  I don’t want others to tell me about how Christian movies suck with their low budget money that should of been spent on a happy meal.  I’m just interested to know whether these people get in contact with the film producers and (in love) share with them a strategy to improve?  Psalm 101 talks about putting to silence him who slanders his neighbor in sercret, tell the producers… not "Us".           Yes, there are many Christian movies I would not be proud of as a Christian to show you.  The same goes for secular movies, there’s some that suck as well.  But rather than telling you to stay away from, and informing you of all the Christian movies that suck.  I will list the ones I recommend and am proud of as a Christian.        Here are some Christian movies I enjoyed     -One Night With The King- -Extreme Days- -Thr3e- -The Visitation- -The Omega Code-    -Facing The Giants- -Jeremiah- -Mercy Streets- -Love Comes Softly- -Passion Of Christ- -Amazing Grace- -Hangmans Curse -Time Chasers- FOR MORE RECOMMENDATIONS GO TO - FOX FAITH FILMS                    You see… I’m not impressed with anyone who talks and talks about the long grass… It’s only when one fertilizes, waters and cuts the grass that I $Pay attention…                                                                                  Your Brother in Christ     Shawn WP Bruneau
