    Awkward moments in Columbus, Ohio

Posted on Sunday 1 February 2009 by Greg @ 7:30 am
    Filed under: Rants

Right now I am sitting in a Starbucks in Columbus, Ohio. Earlier a group of teenagers came in who had attended the Dare 2 Share conference this weeked. I gave one of them a Venti Jesus book and a “dare” to share it with one of the baristas. The high school girl meekly handed the book to the barista and said something like, “I thought you might reading this. It is the story of some teenagers who had a spiritual conversation in a Starbucks.” The barista accepted the book.

When the teenagers left this barista began to tear into the audacity of this teenager. How dare she give her a book about Jesus! She literally opened the book and began to mockingly read random paragraphs.

What is surprising to me is the bitterness in her voice as she read the cover. Just the word “Jesus” set her off. The teenager who passed the book to her seemed humble and sweet enough, not one of those overzealous, winger wagging teens that need a dose of grace and ritalin.

Finally, after hearing this barista mock away for a few minutes I came up to the counter and said these words as gently as I could muster, “You know that book you’re mocking? I wrote it. You may want to read it with an open mind before you totally dismiss it.” She turned to me and went off on how she was raised in religion and didn’t want to have anything to do with it.

Meanwhile the barista who was standing next to her was scanning through it. He seemed interested in what it was saying. She was angry, burnt by her experience in church. I was standing there still trying to wake up from a long weekend.

Suffice it to say awkward moments abounded.

As I sit here sipping my bold coffee of the day I can’t help but be in awe at the catalytic nature of Jesus. Some are repelled by Him (barista #1) and some are compelled by Him (barista #2). I can’t help but be painfully aware at the power of the church both to build the kingdom and destroy it. Whatever congregation she was raised in was most likely one of those rule-driven, religious churches that majors on the externals and minors on love. These churches attack and don’t attract. When it comes to evangelism I believe these congregations do more harm than good.

Either way pray for these baristas. Pray that God does a work in their hearts. Pray that they pick up this little book and actually read it, or better yet, that they would pick up God’s book and read it. In its pages they will see that Christianity is not at all about a religion but a relationship with the God who loves them so much He sent His own Son to die for them.

Let us pray for wisdom as we enter a harvest field filled with “UnChristians” who may increasingly have a predisposition against Jesus because of the type of followers He seems to attract.

    Signed, Greg Stier

      • WOW! Thank you Dare2Share Crew! You are awesome. My youth group was in Columbus. We spent 5 hours in the cars to get to Columbus and return home! Our kids are so reved UP!!!! I was amazed at God’s work. As we drove through the street of Columbus last night, my students my students insisted on keeping our windows down and yelling “God Love YOU!” at those who were on the sidewalks. I was amazed at the smiles and waves they received. GOD IS GOOD! We were kept warm with the spitit of the Lord. A special note to my sister in Christ who was in the skits! YOU touched my heart. I am going to share my story next week with a group of young ladies who need to know they are beautiful in every way to God! I have been struggling with how open I need to be. I was a very reckless teen! In watching you and knowing my girls, I have found the confidence that I need to share openly and express the love of Jesus to them and to let the know that even Christian teens are challenged by sex, drugs, and peer presure and that I will do every thing I can to help them build their armor and attack the demons even if this includes revisiting some of my demons from the past. Thanks to you!!!!

        Hey Greg,
I can understand her anger (the girl who attacked). No matter how much we want it to be, the Church isn’t a perfect place, and can never fully live up to the image we all expect from it. But that doesn’t stop us from putting it up there. Plus, we tend to forget that it mainly consists of broken people, sinners, and people just like us, and so when we do lift it up, it always disappoints us. And if you’ll notice, a huge number of atheists and people who attack the Church today were once devoted church members.

Yeah, many tend to focus more on the religious side of Church or Christianity than the relationship with Jesus-side (which is really what Christianity is all about).

So many become casualties or so damaged by it that the thought of anything they remember from Church, doesn’t always spark any angers towards Jesus, per se, but their memories of the pain they received in His church, and so their initial reaction is to put up the walls of protection and go into defense mode (put up the archers, pull up the drawbridge, light the torches, and prepare for battle).

I’ll pray she finds healing in Jesus and His Church.

      • hey greg! Once again dare2share in columbus was amazing. Im so upset i only have next year left and then im through. Thank you so much for everything.were actually still on the way home now, we live outside of pittsburgh. But when you had us call our one friend the other night i automatically knew who to choose. My boyfriend Blaize and i broke up on the 19th, the day before our 1 and a half year anniversary. He left me for another girl who hes now dating. I found out friday night. We broke up because i wouldnt have sex with him but he says hes a christian… I dont know. But i called him and we talked, and im sincerely trying to make him see that what he wants is wrong. Hes listening to me and i think he might be there next year at the aptly named blaze conference. Keep praying and thanks again! Love you guys!

      • Thank you so much Greg for Dare 2 Share Columbus. I was wondering though if you would pray for me.That i would not lose God in the time between D2S this year, and next. I have a habit of getting into a rut as soon as D2S is over. I am also asking for prayer for my best friend Brooke, that she will begin to see what it is i am talking to her about. Yesterday, after the cell phone challenge she called me back. I was inconveniently in the middle of North Market surrounded by crowds of hungry people (both from D2S and the anime conference) yet i decided to “Shred the Gnar” and dive in and tell her, she shut me down at first, and it was my first time really doing it, so it wasn’t smooth, but I think she will find God soon, before it is too late for her. But i have so many others i know that need God, so i also pray that God will empower me to reach more than I ever could alone. Together us teens can change a lot in this world!!! So thanks again Greg and I will see you next year for sure!!!!

      • Hi Greg! I attended the Dare2Share Conference this weekend and WOWWWW!!! It was incredible I cannot get over it!! I live in a very small town in upstate new york and I came with 50 other teens from my town and another small town. Boy was the 20 hour round trip worth it! My church has about twenty in attendance each week and I just crave this kind of worship! I am not exaggerating when I say that this was probably one of the best weekends of my life. I took me a while to fall asleep last night because I was just so excited and in love with God! Something that I’ve struggled my whole life was being comfortable with sharing the Gospel. I was always afraid that others would think I was weird or make fun of me,so I never talked about Jesus to my “Unchristian” friends. After this weekend I feel like God has lifted the fear away! I realized that I was being selfish keeping the good news to myself!!!! Thank you so much for teaching us how to share the Gospel, because I just wasn’t sure how! I was so sad that this weekend had to end and I really wish I wasn’t a senior right about now because I want to go back so badly! Thank you so much for this experience! I will never ever forget it! Love you guys!
        Love,
        Kathryn

Chaperoned our youth group’s Dare 2 Share trip for the first time this year. My husband is the youth pastor (Greenfield Baptist Church, Erie, PA)and he was in need of female chaperones for the trip so I received the invite. I’m so glad I said yes! There were some great moments for me, watching the kids encounter God and grow bolder in their own willingness to share their faith. Thanks for all that you do!

      • Hey Greg!! I was at the D2S this year and this was my first year to be there. I thought it was awsome & veary moving. You most likely don’t remember with there being close to 6,ooo kids, but you were heding to the room with a big cup of coffee, and I was in a group of 2or3 other guys and 1 girl. One of the guys were caring a riped bag of food and had a small gotee. Any ways thanks to you, Zane, and Dewie I now feel more confedent and ready to go out and explain the G.O.S.P.E.L. And I was just like some of the other kids, scared to share my faith Before. If you have a way to talk to the FEE band then can you tell the singer thanks to him I feel more coftible to rase my hands to god, and if you want give them my e-mail. I did that for my first time there. Same thing with LEE LAND, but tell them they were AWSOME!

      • Mr. Stier,

That is just incredible. I will definitely be praying for them. Oh and You probably don’t remember me, but I saw you at my hotel on Sunday and somehow found enough courage to say Hi. I was at the convention center that weekend, not for dare2share, but for the Anime convention. I was there with my brother and a few friends. I went to dare2share last year (sadly I’m too old now) and it was an AMAZING experience. I took the cellphone challenge and the 48 hour challenge. I’ve always loved sharing my faith with others :D
A couple really funny moments this weekend were when My brothers Jonathan and Darian and I were walking dow the hall and we heard Christian music playing, some of the other anime people said something like “UGH they’re playing CHRISTIAN Music” We chuckled about going to listen to the good music. And the other time Jonathan was taking a picture of one of the cosplayers and somebody next to him said “There are christians everywhere” and Jonathan said “There a christian right next to you” haha It was great to have dare2share there also, it was a good reminder of who we are, just because we like anime and manga, doesn’t mean we can’t also be children of Christ. Well this got pretty long so I’ll stop talking. It was wonderful to meet you. I’m a big fan, and I LOVED Venti Jesus Please. I’ll be praying that more souls will come to Christ because of what the teens did this weekend.

        God Bless,
        Katie

Dare2share was awesome in Columbus.I also went to last years conference. Well anyways for the cellphone challenge last year i called my friend kat who i knew was an agnostic. She told me she didn’t know really if she believed in God. She was also involved in doing spells and saying incantations.Well over the summer God really moved through her and she accepted Christ and last weekend she was with me at Dare2share.Which I was so excited that she was. Also I lead a student led bible study at my school called S.w.a.t. and we went through the Gospel Journey which I think helped them learn how to share the Gospel. So thanks for the Gospel Journey.God Bless you

      • Hey greg! I wanted to thank you sooo much, I am a teen at hilliard church of the Nazarene and I went to dare 2 share in Columbus this weekend. It was my first time being there and I was absolutley inspired. I am already in a tight relationship with Jesus Christ, and the conference just made me want to spread jesus’s love all over. I ran all up and down the streets saying JESUS LOVES YOU!!!!! To everyone that walked by. I also took the cell phone challenge and I was so amazed, I called my friend bre and shared with her. About 20 minutes later she said, thanks Amanda I really needed that. I stopped right in my path, and just today she shared something personal with me. Thanks for giving me the courage:) one of my funny moments is when we were out collecting canned food. Our church van beeps when it backs up, and my friend Marko was standing behind the van on a big sheet of ice. Once he heard it start beeping he thought he was gonna get run over, so he freaked out, slipped on the ice, and landed on his back. It was very quite hilarious.
        Thanks! -Amanda

      • Hey Greg,

I’m sure you’ve heard stories like this before, but once upon a time I would have reacted the same way Barista #1 did. I hated Christians and everything they stood for…I never went to church as a kid, but I did go to Christian schools. In 3rd and 4th grade, my best friends would constantly berate me, telling me how I was going to hell because I didn’t believe in Christ. I was so frightened and hurt by them, and for years I would bash Christians the way they had bashed me….until one day, my boyfriend came into my life. He was so full of the light of Christ. I didn’t know what hit me, but I was awe-inspired by the love he had for everyone. He and his mother showed me who true Christians are, and I was baptized this summer. (I also saw you speak at Creation NW!) God has been a blessing in my life for the last year and a half that I have known Him…

But I’m struggling, and that’s what this big long comment is about. I know you’re a busy man, but if you have a moment for advice (or if any other readers do) I’ll take it. My boyfriend and I, and several of our friends, have started to fall off the path. Life’s been really good lately, and it’s harder to stay focused on God when everything is going the right way. I don’t want that to happen, and I’m thinking that I would like to get my friends together and do a “retreat”, just the group of us, and have some God-time. However…I’m so new to this that I don’t know where to even start! Anyone who’s had any experience, can you give any words of wisdom?

      • Greg, I love it when you share life (your experiences). So Bold and settle at times. I remember years back you shared an experience in Denny’s (I think) and the guy behind you. You had been studying and had all your books and bible and the guy behind you said he did not like religion and you said you did not either but a relationship with Jesus (truncated story). You ended with the hyped attitude. Reading the one today reminded me of that. The catalyst Jesus can cause both positive and negative. It never ceases to amaze me how polarized people can get. You encourage me always when you share life. God Bless.

My dad struggles with drug addiction, and because of this, it has tremendesly hurt my life. Being a teenage girl makes it even worse. I came to church in April of last year, and at the end of June,I got baptized. Neither of my parents really believe in God at all. But, because of all of God, things in my life are becoming easlier, and I’m not on the verge of just shooting myself. :)

      • OH MY GOODNESS GRIEG YOU ROCK!!! Thank you to ALL of the people at d2s its was THE BEST weekend I’ve ever had. It took me a while to find you website but I got here :) Anyways I really agree with what yoU said about some churches…at d2s for once in my life I didn’t feel stupid raising my hands to a song, I sang louder then I ever have before!! (even though my voice isn’t as good as some), and for once I felt so close to god it was like I could just reach over and hug him!!! At my church we have 2 services…I go to the first service with my parents and brother which is traditionally the service for “slightly older” people. I’ve always had that weird feeling when ever I wanted to raise my hands or swing a little or JUST SING no matter what my voice sounds like. But now after d2s and seeing the good singers the not so good singers, the hand raisers, the dancers, and the guys who like to say Amen alot… I think Im no longer scared to break out and raise my hand or sing louder or even say…AMEN! once and a while. SOOOooo long story short D2S really helped me and I will pray for the baristas. CAN NOT WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR GUYS!!
        Thanks so much ~Samuel

      • Hey Greg, thats a cool story. I personally think your book VJP is one of the best witnessing tools out there, it pulls you in in an alarming way (if you read the back cover)and takes you casually through the Gospel in a manor that you may not even realize you are being witnessed to. I bought two copys, one for me, and one to give out to my friends, with a note in it asking them to read it and pass it on. I think it would be cool to get a bunch of them and just start leaving them on Starbucks coffee tables, lab counters at school, restaurants, malls, the park, and just let whoever comes by next have the opportunity to read it. making it from the perspective of the atheist was brilliant! I just started re-reading my copy a few days ago, I make films for the fun of it, and plan to major in film production at the university of Arizona when I transfer next year, reading it again Im like “wow this would be so much fun to make into a short film!” so Im toying with that idea, getting the shots and script running around in my head. If I do decide to make it into a film, I will contact D2S to get legal rights and see if you guys want it made into a film. if you guys do, I think it would be cool to make into a 5 part mini series with each part 5-10 minutes long, so it can be used as a youth group thing… ok Im rambling now. its just an amazing book. the style is amazing, you should think of writing more books in that style sometime. it just blows my mind how well you hit the nail on the head for what people would read and not just throw away… unless your that barista : ( Ill be praying, oh and Great job to the teen who gave her the book : ) keep it up guys.

hi umm my name is danielle and i went to the dare to share you conference the last weekend of january. i called my friend jaynee and i explained to her the gospel, but she still doesn’t believe. the reason why she doesn’t is that when she was little her and her sister got in an accident and her sister had to go to the hospital. everynight jaynee would pray by her bed that God wouldn’t let her die, but then she died. that is when she stopped believing in God. she is a pretty stuborn person and i don’t know what else to say to her. i would greatly appreciate if you had any suggestions to help me make her believe in God. if you could comment this post with suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. thank you!

      • Greg, this has been a life changing event for the teenagers of our church that attended, when we first heard of you comming to the the area we as a staff prayed about comming and approched the leadership of our church, we tried to come up with a way to promote it to our teenagers so we purchased 10 tickets being the first year and we presented it that wanting 8 teens that wanted to step out in faith and step up as young youth leaders for our ministry, we had 8 that wanted to attend they thought that they were going to just another event, we preped them with the pre conference materials provided, and too hold each other accountable until the event, it came the day it is something to come to the city as large as Columbus, we come from a rural area: it came to the event we managed to get up front on Firday night they were total amazed with the music and the momentium that was in the conference then the cell phone challange come of texting a friend name then seeong all the names to apear on the screen, then when it came to the challenge of calling the next day they were amazed one of our teens got in contact with one of his friends that clammed to be a santinist, he walked him throught the steps and explained where we at and asked him about salvation and that day he led this person to Christ. what a blessing, then it came to the canfood drive they were total amazed going into a rear thaey had never been before the one group went to the first door the lady was reluctant at first then they told what they were doing first she said she had nothing to give then they asked to pray with her she just broke down crying to pray for her son, they did then before leaving she said wait a minute then she came back with 3 arms ful of can goods, she said she had been praying to God for help for her son she was broken and Blessed that God had answered her prayer. our youth never had done anything like this before and batteling the ice and snow they went on door to door spreading the gospel some doors was shut and then there were a few more that responded to the call. this is a event they will never forget about and we are going to try that in out in our area. We are planning to cme back next year on part of your staff at Dare2share thanks for impouring into teenagers lives of how easy it is too witness and do the Great comission. We all loved how you transisioned the video clips between the speakers and music and skits it was very well present. Our motto of our Youth Ministry is ” Seeing Our Generation changed one YOUTH at a time.”
