A poem I wrote a few years ago

Posted on Thursday 8 June 2006 by Greg @ 5:25 pm
    Filed under: Rants

    From a Teen’s Eyes

You tell me to get a job

So I can earn my keep.

And purchase all the little things

I like and want and need.

You tell me to go to church

    So I can be religious.

    And find some inner harmony

    While looking quite prestigious.

But what you say so often

    Makes no sense to me.

I do not understand at all

    What you’re telling me.

    You have a college education

    A reputation that is strong.

    You have a great job

You work hard and smart and long.

But I see not valid reason

To go to church with you.

I see no inner love or peace

In what you say or do.

    I don’t see any evidence

Of this God you claim to know.

I don’t hear Him in the words you speak

I don’t sense Him in your soul.

So I will get a real good job

    And go to college too.

    I’ll build a solid reputation

By the hard work that I’ll do.

But when it comes to church and stuff

I think that I will pass.

I have no need to look "holy"

    To my Bible class.

You can go to church on Sunday

You can seek your own applause

You can keep your stale religion.

You can keep your tiny god.

    Signed, Greg Stier

      • That is a cool poem! (I mean ‘nicely’written’ by that)  Unfortunately for a good portion of teens, that poem is true.   .   .   .

      • The answer for revival – for change is not going to be in changing the "adults". The answer is in getting young people to accept Christ as their own and not being afraid to stand out from the crowd and stand up for Him.  – -  Adults keep pouring your life into these kids. Teach them. Encourage them. Send them out.  – -  Students take the chance to change a life – its the best addiction you can have. Accept who God has made you and called you to be. Rely on Him for your strength and courage and make a stand. He will be there with you – no doubt

      • I’ve never read a poem that hit so close to home in regards to how I felt as a teenager.  I thank God that I got over myself!  My prayer, now that I am a father, is that this poem will never relate to my own son.  Thanks dad (earthly dad), for staying true to your son (me), even when I looked at you through the eyes of this poem.

      • Nice, Greg, very nice! (you’re a poet and we didn’t know it!) Sadly, that sounds like so many teens that I’ve talked to. How many years back was that when you wrote that poem? Signing Off, Ashley

      • it’s sad….that poem was like how i was when i was about 9…..then my brother came back from a Hot Hearts conference and i saw something different in him….when i asked him what happened..he just said that it was a "God-thing"…..that was the first time i ever saw God through somebody else…..you’re poem kind of goes with the saying that "you might be the only Bible someone ever reads"

      •                    Personally the potential I see in this poem is that the teen finds no Godly evidence in the actions and behaviors in the adult that is presuading him to church.  It is a basically ruined mission with in teenage case.  For most teenagers this is true but they do not see true Godly message behind it.  It was like what you said in the rant of how it bothers you to see Christians that act better than everyone else.  If they wonder why their missions constantly fall through it’s because they do not practice what they preach
