“Oh yeah daddy?”

Posted on Wednesday 24 January 2007 by Greg @ 1:20 pm
Filed under: Home Sweet Home

The other day I came home from the gym and found my little boy in the kitchen. I took off my jacket and was about to make some breakfast for him when I noticed he was staring at my arms (I was wearing a sleaveless gym shirt). Now, you’ve got to understand something…my arms aren’t too big. I try to get to the gym a few times a week and work them out a bit, but for some reason I didn’t get that "bodybuilding gene" the rest of my family seems to have.

I have one cousin who at one point was 240 pounds (although only 5′8" tall) and could bench press 550 pounds. I, on the other hand, am lucky to bench the bar and both clasps on a good day with a good spotter and a protein shake.

My gym goal is to be almost, quasi-semi buff. For me a compliment is, "Hey, if you worked out you could get big." Just knowing that somebody sees potential in my puny arms is enough encouragement for me and my baby biceps to keep working out from time to time.

How does this all tie into being a preacher and evangelist? It could be handy. Think about it. If a preacher has got enough tricep showing when he preaches and points to the text the audience knows that if they charge the stage he can give them a taste of the "Old Testament" right upside their head for the glory of God.

Just kidding. Preaching and violence don’t mix. I’ve tried it before and strained my hamstring in the process.

Anyway, my little boy is looking at my little arms and I said something daddy muey macho like, "You see these boy. You can’t buy these in the store. These babies are homegrown."

I’ll never forget Jeremy’s response, "Oh yeah daddy?" holding his five year old arms up in a bodybuilder pose, "Well these are made of chocolate."

I don’t even know why his little statement was funny. But it was. I made his breakfast wondering how I got one-uped again by a Kindergartner.

Speaking of flexing, it reminds me of God’s words in Jeremiah 9:23, 24, "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom. Neither let the rich man boast about his riches, or the mighty man of his might. But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me…." At the end of the day big biceps, bank accounts or brains don’t matter. The only thing that matters is that we know, love and serve our Almighty God.

It’s a good thing God doesn’t wear a sleaveless shirt. One look at a God’s fully flexed biceps and we’d all be running like scared school girls into the night (no offense to any scared school girls reading this right now.)

Gotta go…for some reason I’m hungry for chocolate!

Signed, Greg Stier

    • Hey Greg! Aww your son is so adorable! I agree with you! Just yesterday i was thinking about that. it had been a stressful day. and i was laying in bed and i was like none of this stuff(school, home, boys) were important. What was important is that I loved the Lord more with all the stress. He doesnt give us more then we can handle! I hope your having a great week! Please Pray for me! God Bless Brianna

    •                   Hey there Greg!  awww little Jeremy is so cute.  It’s just adorable how he finds something to say that is hilarious at the moment.  I’ll tell you that kid’s growing up fast.  His child-like faith is never fading though.  Glad that you are teaching him so well though he has dropped the theory of spinach giving you the Pop-eye effect with the Ecoli out break.  Chocolate is not the best substitute for vegetables for building mucle but it is so cute.  Like a little Dennis the Mennis with a faith in God.  So cute ^^  well gotta go now I want chocolate! :)

    • I have one of those bo-solo-flexi thingys in my garage as well as an elipiacle thingy in my basement. My wife likes to give me the "exercise equipment collecting dust" lecture whenever I slack off for a week. Anyway, though I may not use the gym equipment everyday I do use my spiritual equipment (God’s Word) everyday. Just the other day my wife told me that she enjoys watching her husband flex his spiritual muscle when he spends hours with God preparing a message for our weekly youth service. See you in two weeks at Columbus.

    • Man that is just funny! Those are the moments, Greg. Interestingly your choice of verse is exactly what I thought of a few weeks ago. I used to be "the guy" that carried everything for others, and lifted pianos by myself (much like your cousin). It’s tough not being able to pick up my girls right now, but showing my weakness for God’s glory will be my new strength……Now where is that number I had for Art Linkletter and Bill….

    • hey just like everyone else is saying…that is so adorable!  i think you schould make a book about what your son says…it would be a best seller! haha.  i also agree with what your point was… there have been so many times that i put my heart into stuff…like school, friends, boys, work, boys (haha) and family, but every time Gods like "dude erika…me first" and those things just fade away.  your awesome God bless -eRika

    • that’s alright greg..a similar thing happened to my brother over Christmas break…my little cousin Clay, who is 7 years old and my brother who is 21 were messin around upstairs….and my brother picked up Clay and dropped him easily onto the couch and made a body builder type pose and jokingly/seriously  said,"you just wish you had these guns."…and Clay just looks at him and says,"Guns?…They look more like water pistols to me."……me and my 3 other cousins were in the room at the time and we all just busted out laughing for like 10 minutes at my brother…so no worries…you’re not the only one that gets one-upped by a little kid..haha
