    The Zane Factor

Posted on Wednesday 11 March 2009 by Greg @ 9:02 pm

I have been speaking to teenagers since I was a teenager. In all that time (25+ years) I have NEVER seen teenagers respond to anybody like they have to my buddy and fellow preacher, Zane Black. What’s funny is that he started stuffing outreach bags as a volunteer at the Denver Dare 2 Share conference years ago.

We saw something special in him and used him as a mountain guide and activities director in the original GOSPEL Journey. Over the course of seven full days I got to see the way he interacted with the teenagers and twentysomethings. I couldn’t help but notice that his personality was a unique and powerful combination of pure joy, genuine compassion and child-like wonder mixed in with a strangely compelling “surfer dude” kind of eloquence.

It has been a pleasure to see him bloom over the last two years traveling, first as an emcee, and now as a full blown speaker with the Dare 2 Share conferences. The thing about Zane is that he is still on an accelerated tragectory as a speaker and is getting better and better with each event.

Sometimes people ask me how I feel about Zane’s popularity among the teenagers at Dare 2 Share. I think they think that I may be self conscious about how well the teens receive him. I think they think I’m nervous that Zane is more popular than me.

To be honest I am relieved. My goal is not to be popular but to be effective. And with speakers like Derwin Gray (another unbelievably solid and motivational preacher) and Zane I feel more than effective. It’s like having two UFC fighters backing you up in a street fight against the school bully. And that’s what these events are, a street fight with Satan for the attention and souls of these teenagers. I’m also relieved because I feel fully confident that if I ever went down due to illness or whatever that the show would go on without skipping a beat.

Last week as I was standing on the stage during the Saturday night portion of the conference our stage manager came out to me during a movie clip. He whispered in my ear that my flight out that night (to another speaking gig) had been cancelled and that my only option was a 9:30 pm flight that night. It was 8:15pm when he told me that. In a moment’s notice Zane was ready. I quickly wrapped up that session and in between movie clips gave Zane a quick pep talk. He just looked at me, put out his fist and said, “One team. One dream.”

He did the final talk in Phoenix and wrapped up the entire evening. I called our director for the program from the airport and asked her how Zane did. She said, “I don’t want to make you self conscious or anything but he was absolutely incredible.”

Guess what? I’m having Zane wrap up the Saturday night portion for all the rest of the Invincible events. I thank God for Zane, Derwin and the entire crew that pulls off the conference week in and week out. They are all incredible and they all love Jesus.

    One team, one dream indeed.

Here’s a little sample of my buddy Zane’s speaking style taken from some teenager’s phone at a D2S conference. Enjoy.

    Signed, Greg Stier

      • Hey Greg, I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to talk to you lately. You know my friend Tarah? Well, her mom died Saturday. I had to talk to all my friends about that and stuff. I’ve also been busy talking to this girl which I really like and stuff, and I found out that she cuts. I’m also skipping studying for my geometry final to talk to you. Yeah, I know that I should focus on that but I can’t. I have to get this stuff off my chest. Anyways I can really relate to all the things you say about Zane. It’s really hard to not let your selfishness kick in and take control. It’ hard to not realize that those demons are tempting you. Zane is a great Christian. I just wish that I’m a lot closer to people that have the passion like you, me, Zane, Derwin, and many, many others. I pray for it everyday. I want to talk to you about your opinion on religion because some of this stuff is just completely confusing me. Please email me because it’s so hard to talk to you on these blogs. I also want to know about your MySpace if you have one. Just help me, and pray for me. Keep your focus. Caleb.

      • Zane and Greg are very similar in that: (1) they are FOR REAL, and (2) teens can relate to them. Zane speaks their language…at their level…and is more “like one of them” (let’s face it…can anyone imagine Greg Stier trying to flip a skateboard? And NOT expect an ambulance to show up?)

Greg is more the “mentor” or “teacher” role: you know, the one teacher you LOVED in school, because you learned so much more than what the class was supposed to teach you? That guy.

Derwin? Talk about “don’t believe the packaging” mindsets…the guy is HUGE, intimidation-easy size, but, has the heart for Jesus that makes him just a big loving teddy bear.

The point is, all three (and the rest of the D2S crew) all complement one another (sort of like a trinity in and of themselves, I’ll leave it to you all to determine which one you think is which) to truly come together and change lives for the better, and lead them to God.

Greg’s mantra of “make disciples who make disciples” is starting to show itself in our youth group, where “shreddin’” has led to several new converts to the faith, and in interest of the new members to learn to surf it themselves.

I have seen the payoff in action from both Greg and Zane (who, by the way, visited our group late January). It works, and it’s not just hype. Lives HAVE been changed.

The glory of what Greg, Zane, and Dewey goes to God anyways, so it’s nice to see the humility, that could otherwise so easily disappear with events of this magnitude.

      • So I’ve spent the past six months going through Ephesians. I didn’t intend to take this long, but it sure is cool how I’m ending on the armor the week before we leave for Seattle’s D2S. Anyway, I’m doing the armor tonight w/our jr. highers, and I figure this is a great promo for last minute sign-ups, to encourage those going, and to help me make a point about what the shield is. Great job, Zane.

      • Greg! Your pretty much awesome too! You and Zane are both 100% cool! If you wouldn’t discover dare 2 share, zane wouldn’t be a speaker and everything. You make this ministry incredible! You are awesome! and Zane is a cool dude too. I met Zane with my youth group at D2S Lincoln. My youth pastor and him saw each other at Windermere, and so our youth kids got to meet him and everything. So props for you, zane, and derwin! Keep up the good work! :)

Long time no see — let’s change that. How about I meet you, Zane, Derwin and the whole crew in Seattle on Friday? We’ll try to be right up front so we can cheer you on!
Looking forward to the trip (the change of scenery from the Denver crowd) and getting to hear all of you speak.
Blessings as you prepare for the fantastic weekend!

      • Humility is confidence rightly placed. A leader is only as good as his/her team. The sum of all of us is always greater than one of us. All this to say; D2S is an amazing community of believers with common vision and values. Blessed to be a blessing seems to be a theme when you brush shoulders with D2S. Not only does D2S want to see people rise up who know Jesus and can make Him known; they also seek to raise up leaders who can reproduce leaders that influence people toward Christ. Beginning with the end in mind is always a great place to start. Leading by example…thank you Greg, Zane, Jeremy and the rest of the team for being leaders of leaders! I am blessed and so is our community. 1 Cor 15:58. The train is on the tracks and it’s coming to town! Let’s go DEEP! Let’s go WIDE! Let’s GOOOOOOOOOO! Matt 28: 18-20

      • My teens and I loved the D2S Conference in Atlanta this year. One of my teens read the “Shreddin the Gnar” book in 4 days. He also got a chance to speak with Zane at the conference and was very encouraged. He wrote a list of 5 people that he plans to share the gospel and put it at his nightstand. Out of the blue, one of the people on his list texted him. He shared the gospel with her and she prayed to accept Christ.

We just started the Gospel Journey Maui and it’s going great. The teens are diving into spiritual conversations. Greg thanks for all you and D2S do.
